Inspired by the Vertigo Comics series of the same name, The CW launched iZombie and the show grew a large following in part because the program used the comics as a launching pad to create it's own unique world. Liv Moore is a "functioning" zombie who has learned more about life as one of the undead as opposed to taking life for granted when she was alive. Her particular kind of ghoul is sentient and while she does have to eat brains in order to function normally in her Seattle based environment where she works at a coroner's office and through feeding on the brains of the deceased, she is able to access their memories and subsequently help solve crimes. Over time she even has developed various recipes to make her dietary requirement more palatable. Through the course of the thirteen episodes that make up the first season, we discover there is a lot more to Liv's world than even she could imagine and the stakes rise as the situation grow more intense building toward the first season finale.
While I prefer the old school zombies George A. Romero created over forty five years ago and have been brilliantly brought to life on the small screen with AMC's The Walking Dead, I can see how iZombie would appeal to a more youthful demographic that The CW pretty much specializes in. While iZombie is available in high definition as a digital download, Warner Brothers Studios Home Entertainment has chosen to release the series on physical media only on standard definition DVD video. The picture and sound quality are terrific with the program's original television aspect ratio preserved at (1.78:1) enhanced for 16 by 9 televisions. English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are encode onto all three discs within the standard size DVD keep case, which comes house in a cardboard slip.
Deleted scenes are included for six of the thirteen episodes each accompanying their respective related episode and not as a reel on one disc, but the other bonus content featuring the 2014 Comic-Con Panel is on the third disc. An insert detailing the episodes with airdates and location of the respective extra value features is included within the DVD keep case along with a limited time survey link sheet included too.
The complete first season of iZombie will be available on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at retailers on and offline courtesy of Warner Brothers Studios Home Entertainment.
