England Is Mine: On Becoming Morrissey Blu-ray Disc Review

The Following Blu-ray Disc Review Contains Major Spoilers.

England Is Mine is a biographical dramatization of the early life of Stephen Morrissey, the lead singer of the 1980’s iconic alternative band, The Smiths and later he went on to enjoy a successful solo career. I met Morrissey while he was shopping for music at the Virgin Mega Store Time Square in the 1990s. I was amazed by how down to Earth he was and engaging as well. I only got to speak to him for a few minutes before fans began to descend upon him, but I am very glad that I was able to share a few words with him and he seemed interested in what I had to say. I loved The Smiths in high school and felt the fusion between Morrissey’s singing and lyrics and Johnny Marr’s rocking guitar was what made The Smiths stand out and to this day new generations of teenagers and college kids discover Morrissey and The Smiths as a voice for the universal angst of generations.

England Is Mine focuses upon a very specific time in Morrissey’s life from 1976 to the early 1980s when Morrissey goes to see Johnny Marr after having met him for the first time a day or so before and having shared some similar taste in music and style. Morrissey is depicted as being a somewhat introverted and bookish young man from what I describe as a blue-collar middle class family in Manchester not too unlike what I imagine a lot of people who grow up in western society experience. He simply does not fit in with following what is expected of him, which is to get a job in an office or a hospital and work and live what I think he consider a humdrum life devoid of any dreams or aspirations toward working within the arts. He makes friends with young woman who paints and a guitarist that help bring him out of his shell. However when both of his friends leave for artistic opportunities in London, Morrissey must find the strength within to become his own man. Then one day Johnny Marr knocks on his door. That’s it. That is the whole movie and that is about as much depth we get, which I think is a big problem with the film. At approximately 95 minutes, I felt the film ends just when it starts to get interesting. I never felt much emotional attachment for any of the characters and compared to other biopics like one produced about the late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis entitled Control, which was produced by one of the producers of this film, England Is Mine feels like a TV movie more than a feature film and it just lacks enough emotional resonance that made me feel as though I understood Morrissey as a human being better after seeing the movie than I did before. That is why I opened this review with my brief meeting with the real Morrissey in Time Square. I got more out of casually talking with the man than I did watching this whole feature and I just shared a few brief verbal exchanges. I did not interview the guy and I’m pretty sure the experience was more memorable for me than it was for him.

I am sorry too because the film is well acted with Dunkirk star Jack Lowden as Steven Morrissey and the beautiful Jessica Brown Findlay as Morrissey’s painting friend Linda Sterling. Simone Kirby is quite good as Morrissey’s supportive Mother, but even here, the film seems to just show scenes that amount to instances that are repeated throughout the film. Morrissey had some trouble fitting in. Not everyone was nice to him. He had to work in jobs he hated. He stayed up late reading and writing while his father was unsympathetic and told him to get a job. So what? This sounds like the biography of my life and millions of other people except Morrissey got lucky and became famous. He is talented so I only mention luck because there are plenty of untalented people who are famous on the television every day thus talent is not a guarantee of anything anymore than a college guarantee a graduating student a job once he has completed his or her studies. Plus he sort of just starts looking and dressing like the Morrissey we have come to know because he read a lot of books and stared at a picture of James Dean. What was he reading? I don’t know. Why did his father suddenly back off when usually the longer an unemployed son or daughter lives with his parents the greater the anxiety over his future begins to build up in his or her parents. So with no emotional resonance, I think even diehard fans in America at least will be somewhat disappointed by the film’s lack of depth and it’s ending, which as noted above feels like the point when the story was just starting to get interesting.

England Is Mine features a retrospective feature length audio commentary with Director Mark Gill and Star Jack Lowden. Personally I found the featurette Smoke And Mirrors (21:54) with Cinematographer Nicholas D. Knowland, B.S.C. to be far more engaging than any of the other extra features included on this Blu-ray Disc. A behind-the-scenes short entitled Sad Facts Little Known (8:28) is also included along with a somewhat bland motion still gallery (3:42). The film is presented with a beautiful high definition 1080p/24fps AVC encoded picture along with a choice of English DTS-HD MA or English Linear PCM 2.0 Soundtracks and optional English Subtitles.

England Is Mine, also known as England Is Mine: On Becoming Morrissey is available now on Blu-ray Disc at retailers on and offline courtesy of MVD Visual Entertainment Group and Cleopatra Entertainment.

Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series Blu-ray Disc Set Review

Alternatively referred to as Twin Peaks: The Return when it broadcast on Showtime in the U.S., Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series on Blu-ray Disc is the culmination of over four years of development between series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost to reassemble the cast, some of whom passed away during and after the production, and continue the story in show time 25 years later and layer within it more esoteric symbolism and multiple meanings that could be discussed for years to come. Without revealing any spoilers, the series ending, which has certain hints of what is to come that are easier to spot upon multiple viewings, is probably one of the most divisive conclusions to broadcast and stream on a premium pay cable network since David Chase’s finale to The Sopranos. While David Lynch proves himself to be an American Master Filmmaker of the highest order in what is essentially an 18-hour feature film spread across the summer of 2017, Lynch and Frost greatly expand the Twin Peaks Universe to include locations set in New York, the Midwest, Las Vegas and even other dimensions of existence where the supernatural influences the seemingly unrelated synchronistic events that culminate in an explosive confrontation between malevolent forces and benevolent forces moving characters into place almost like a  cryptic chess game. Star Kyle MacLachlan carries a huge weight with an all star ensemble cast as he portrays no less than three distinct characters that has earned him a well deserved Best Actor Golden Globe nomination and I hope everyone involved with the making of this series will get accolades of some sort of recognition that will boost their respective careers regardless of who they are and what they did. Even as a kind of publicity spokesperson for the show while David Lynch was abroad during the series first premiere airing on Showtime, Mr. MacLachlan represented Twin Peaks in a first rate way, whether it was appearing on television talk shows on both sides of the Atlantic, interacting with fans on Facebook, and attending SDCC 2017, I don’t think anyone outside of Lynch himself could pull off the publicity in such a genuine matter.

For twenty five years, the good FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (MacLachlan) has been trapped within the Black Lodge while his doppelganger infused with the demonic spirit known as Bob, has concocted a plan to stay in our reality as he searches for the coordinates to what perhaps could be described as the mother of all evil with the aid of shadowy entities that appear as Dark Woodsmen who serve their master on Earth and beyond. The Black Lodge is a sort of combination of purgatory or the underworld and perhaps even Hell itself. Beyond the veil of time as we understand it, Cooper’s chance at restoring balance and returning to our world are put at risk during an attempt to sabotage his return that results in him coming back in the guise of Insurance Claims Inspector Douggie (MacLachlan), a kind of savant like presence whose actions bring together various old and new characters as well as many Actors that have worked with Lynch before in strange and at times wonderful rendezvous.

The Blu-ray Disc Box Set contains eight discs within a cardboard gatefold with the red curtains and strange floor pattern of the Black Lodge on it as well as disc content details printed upon it too. The outer case is a tableau of the three characters MacLachlan inhabits within the series. All of the episodes as well as extra value content are presented in 16 by 9 1080p full HD resolution while all of the episodes include English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround Sound that captures Lynch’s signature sound design to great atmospheric effect. English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are also encoded onto all eight discs. Extra value features include on disc one all of the Showtime promo spots (5:44) as well as the Showtime promotional featurette, Phenomenon (14:26) and the episodes on discs one and two can either be viewed in their episodic form or in the broadcast feature length presentations of episodes one and two (1:51:37) and three and four. Disc two also features the Twin Peaks SDCC Panel (1:01:33) complete with David Lynch’s video introduction presented to attendees and later released on YouTube. Disc seven contains a complete crew list for everyone involved in the making of this series (4:02) as well as a behind the scenes documentary by Charles de Lauzirika (27:10) and two behind-the-scenes films by series Actor Richard Beymer (29:23 collectively). All of the Rancho Rosa Logos (2:22) and a photo gallery wrap up the features on the seventh disc.

Finally disc eight contains the multipart feature length behind-the-scenes documentary Impressions: A Journey Behind The Scenes Of Twin Peaks (4:51:07), which sounds as though it was narrated by Werner Herzog even though it is not to my knowledge after checking IMDB while reviewing the extra value materials in this Blu-ray set. Each disc’s interactive menus features various locals from the series in the background at times with jarring sound waves that include the swishing red curtains of the Black Lodge, the floor pattern of the Black Lodge, the waterfalls, the forest, the moon, another forest backdrop and the R&R Café.

This is truly one of the most comprehensive TV sets I have ever reviewed for a television series on Blu-ray Disc and a must have companion to the 2014 Blu-ray Disc set, Twin Peaks: The Complete Mystery. Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series is available now on Blu-ray Disc at retailers on and offline courtesy of CBS Blu-ray Disc and Paramount Home Entertainment.

Brooklyn, NY – December 18, 2017 -- This January, FilmRise will release “Pornocracy,” the provocative exposé on the modern-day porn industry. Directed by former French adult film director Ovidie, the investigative documentary, which was an Official Selection at SXSW 2017, captured international audiences with its shocking and informative presentation of the current changes in the multi-billion dollar X-rated industry. The film will be available on Amazon Video, iTunes, Google Play and Vudu, as well as DVD and Blu-ray January 16, 2018.

Pornocracy” is a disturbing look at how the wonders of the internet has made the shady industry of pornography rich. The provocative documentary highlights interspersing interviews with former and current porn stars, directors, studio heads, and CEOs of internet companies that now run the streaming websites. However -- it is now in death cramps due to piracy ruining the market and forcing the participants to perform more extreme sex.Through an insider’s eye, Ovidie investigates how the arrival of these free streaming websites, which feature amateur and pirated clips, has transformed the way porn is created and consumed.  In her investigation, she exposes how a group of programmers hijacked the adult industry to create a mysterious multinational corporation that virtually controls the entire adult industry worldwide.

As Ovidie states, her film “reveals how a group of ‘geeks’ with no experience in pornography have hijacked the adult industry and are slowly killing it with their controversial financial structures.”

In addition to SXSW, “Pornocracy” was an Official Selection at Denmark’s CPH-DOX and Docville International Documentary Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter called it “A business-centric look at the sex-vid industry,” and Indiewire said “Pornocracy is a service to adult entertainers and brings attention to a troubling trend that should make some think twice before indulging in free porn.”

The film has a running time of 77 minutes and is Not Rated. It is in French and English, with English subtitles.

mother! Blu-ray Disc Review

Troubled by the inconsistencies in the ideology of the Roman Catholic Church, Saint Thomas Aquinas sought to raise the level of theological debate through logic.. Seven centuries later despite the flaws in his argument, Aquinas’ postulation that God was The First to push, which cosmologically states that everything that moves must have had something push it and in turn that thing pushes another and so on. The question would further develop from there and is still studied in contemporary books on theoretical physics, meta physics and or philosophy, which is if God created the universe did God have a choice? There is a fringe area in science where the esoteric and the scientific coexist comfortably, especially when one considers regardless of how one interprets God, Theoretical Physicists have long stated that their ultimate goal is to know the mind of God. This question is something that has personally interested me from both a layperson’s perspective and a creative writer’s perception for a long time and it is part of the tapestry of my 2016 science fiction novella, First Mover. First Maker. I find that Auteur Darren Aronofsky’s work often deals with similar esoteric themes that call into question the nature of our being whether it is in his feature film debut Pi or in other films he has directed like The Tree Of Life, Noah, and now most recently with his feature film mother! I would even state that some of his more grounded films like Requiem For A Dream could be looked upon in a similar way even though there are no overt supernatural occurrences in his adaptation of Hubert Selby’s acclaimed novel. However whether it is the Beat Generation Authors and Playwrights or established contemporary filmmakers and storytellers like Darren Aronofsky, a film that presents a point of view that combines elements of Judeo-Christian esotericism with contemporary vision and then sets it within an Octagonal House seemingly isolated from the world and yet encompassing it in total, I like a film that does not give me all the answers, but instead offers the viewer multiple interpretations on what is going on and what is the filmmaker trying to tell us? While some answers may seem more plausible than others, there are not necessarily any right or wrong answers because sometimes the Artist knows not why the Artist does what the Artist does, but the Artist’s work speaks it’s own words based upon the interpretation of the beholder. So I see in it the question Saint Thomas Aquinas asked and have one interpretation, but my perception is neither the only way one can look at mother! nor is it right or wrong either. I could discuss this film for hours and I am sure many have and will do so in the future, but ultimately I feel the viewer should enter this film knowing as little as possible so they can take in the experience for themselves and that is why I will not discuss any story points in this review beyond what I have detailed above. You have to see this film for yourself.

Paramount Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray Disc edition features a beautiful AVC encoded 1080p/24fps high definition presentation depending upon the users own viewing equipment and couples is with an enveloping English Dolby ATMOS Soundtrack that is backwardly compatible with Dolby TrueHD Systems too. A standard definition 16 by 9 enhanced version of the film is included within the two-disc Blue BD case. Both the Blu-ray Disc and DVD versions feature an English Descriptive Audio Track that narrates the action for the visually impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks along with English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded as options. The Blu-ray Disc also features standard English Subtitles and a Portuguese Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack and optional Portuguese Language Subtitles too. Within the BD case is an insert with a limited time only redeemable code for a Digital Copy for either i’Tunes  or Ultraviolet users. The Blu-ray Disc also includes a documentary detailing the making of the film with extensive high definition behind-the-scenes footage and interviews (29:51) and the makeup effects (6:45) detailing the animatronics creations made for the film too. The interactive menus are all well rendered and easy to navigate.

A Christmas Tail...

And with almost statue like attention, eyes fixed, nostrils flared and ears tuned, the quartet could feel saliva slowly fill the inside of their mouths as they anticipated the rare, moist and lightly salted treasure coming toward them on a platter. The culmination of all their quiet discipline was just a few moments away. Not even a whimper or a grunt would spoil this moment frozen across all time. Then the little red one farted...
Happy Holidays!
