New York, NY – February 27, 2020 – Sky Island Films announced today the nationwide theatrical release of INSIDE THE RAIN, the award-winning movie about a bipolar college student, (Aaron Fisher) who is expelled from school and determined to prove his innocence with the help of a moonlighting sex worker he meets (Ellen Toland). The film, directed and written by and starring Aaron Fisher also stars Rosie Perez, Eric Roberts, Catherine Curtin and Paul Schulze. Although INSIDE THE RAIN is a work of fiction, Fisher, who suffers from bipolar disorder, took the last 10 years of his life and infused his experiences into this 90- minute movie.  The film opens on Friday, March 13 at the Village East Cinema in NYC and Los Angeles at Laemmle Theaters on March 20.  It will then expand to top markets nationwide including Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, DC, Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Miami and Denver, among others.

INSIDE THE RAIN received rave critical reviews throughout its film festival run, including “Insightful and audacious, with terrific cast…raw and heartfelt emotion” by Westwood One, “Genuine and authentic... impressive” by Film Threat andCaptivating” by Tribune Wire Service. It won Best Feature Film at NY’s Big Apple Film Festival and Special Jury Narrative Award at Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival, was nominated for Best Narrative Feature at Woodstock Film Festival and Best Comedy Feature at the San Diego Film Festival.  INSIDE THE RAIN was also the centerpiece film at the Twin Cities Film Festival and January’s sole feature film selection at the Los Angeles NewFilmmakers Film Festival.

Synopsis

College film student Benjamin Glass (played by writer-director Aaron Fisher) has it all: ADHD, OCD, borderline personality. And he’s also bipolar. But Glass is more than his diagnoses - he prefers the term “recklessly extravagant” - and he’s determined to prove his genius. When a misunderstanding threatens to expel him from college, Glass pushes back; he plans on recreating the incident on video with the help of a moonlighting sex worker (Ellen Toland), to clear his name. But how will he raise the money for the film, when his parents dismiss the scheme as another manic episode?

INSIDE THE RAIN is a wincingly funny rom-com-drama, anchored by off- kilter performances by co-stars Fisher and Toland. The colorful ensemble cast includes Rosie Perez as a tough love shrink, Eric Roberts as an unhinged film producer, and Catherine Curtin and Paul Schulze as the long-suffering parents. The ultimate underdog film and proof that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible.

INSIDE THE RAIN is produced by George LaVoo and presented by Act 13 in association with Killer Films. It is executive produced by Christine Vachon, Danny Fisher and Javier Gonzalez.

  • Leap Year was first introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC.

  • There are about 187,000 people in the US, and 4 million people worldwide who were born on Leap Day.
  • Leap year babies get their driver's licenses when they are officially four years old (or 16 calendar years)!
  • How do you know if it’s going to be a Leap Year? Most years that can be divided evenly by 4 are Leap Years, with the exception on Century Years. Century Years are not Leap Years unless they can be evenly divided by 400.

What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael coming to DVD and digital on June 16th via Juno Films

Juno Films will release Rob Garver's What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael on June 16th via MVD Entertainment Group. The film had its world premiere at Telluride and premiered theatrically at Film Forum in January 2020.

Tagged by Roger Ebert as the most influential film critic of the late twentieth century, the film tells the story of Pauline's turbulent life and work, through never-seen archival footage, her published writing and personal letters, and interviews with both friends and foes of her pen. Pauline is voiced by Sarah Jessica Parker, and participants include Quentin Tarantino, Camille Paglia, David O. Russell, Molly Haskell, Francis Ford Coppola, and daughter Gina James.

Pauline Kael (1919-2001) was likely the most powerful, and personal, movie critic of the 20th century. Writing for The New Yorker and publishing a dozen best-selling books, she ruthlessly pursued what made a movie or an actor's performance work, or not, and why. Her passion made her both admired and despised amongst her readers and her subjects. Pauline's own story is one of struggle and obsession: the fight to establish her voice and have it heard, and to raise a daughter on her own in a time when the obstacles were high.  The latter golden age of movies of the 1960s and 1970s are the focus of this film that pursues the question of what made Pauline Kael's work so individual, so controversial - and so damned good.

New York-based director and editor Garver also produced for 29Pictures LLC, alongside Glen Zipper, producer of the Academy-Award winning documentary Undefeated,  and co-producer Doug Blush (20 Feet From Stardom).  Composer Rick Baitz (The Vagina Monologues) wrote original music for the film, and visual effects were created by Minbomb/LA.

The deal was negotiated between Elizabeth Sheldon, Juno's CEO and co-founder, and Eric Sloss of Cinetic. "Pauline Kael was a badass female film critic at a time when women were fighting for equality and respect," says Sheldon. "She remains an icon and iconoclast for film lovers today. We are thrilled to be working with Rob Garver to bring the film to American audiences."

Garver adds, "I think Pauline would be amused (and maybe worried) that a movie had been made about her.  And she'd get a kick out of it being distributed by another woman.  I am very excited to work with Elizabeth and Juno Films on a 5-year labor of love."

Juno Films distributes an eclectic and critically-acclaimed mix of films. Recent releases include the BFI's 2K restoration of Shiraz and Barbara Rubin and The Exploding New York Underground.

DVD bonus features:
- Never before released interview of Pauline Kael with Alfred Hitchcock

- Quentin Tarantino Interview Excerpts

- Paul Schrader Interview Excerpts

- Deleted Scenes

PARASITE COMES TO HULU 4/8

 EXCLUSIVELY STREAMING
APRIL 8
This year's historic Best Picture winning film Parasite, from NEON, will be available on Hulu beginning Wednesday, April 8.   Parasite made waves this awards season with both critics and audiences alike.  Visionary director Bong Joon Ho, took home four Oscar wins including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film.  Additional accolades include the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, the SAG Award for Best Ensemble Cast and the Palme D’or, which is the top prize at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Some quick thoughts about Uncut Gems.

Uncut Gems tonally reminded me of Bad Lieutenant (1992) even though both films are very different. Both men are self destructive and searching for something to believe in and they take a gamble. One roots for Harvey Keitel as much as they root for Adam Sandler despite both characters being selfish and repugnant people. Easily the best role of Sandler's career and the best drama he's appeared in since Punch Drunk Love. More drama Adam, please.

Why I Love Star Wars And It's Mythic Resonation In My Life.

I grew up on Star Wars with the first film hitting me at the perfect age of 8 back in 1977. For me Luke Skywalker was my hero. I identified with him and the morals Star Wars taught resonated greatly in my life. From the classics to the prequels and now the sequels, I feel a lot of things about life, including how to live a humble and good life, checking one's ego at the door, the nature of becoming an adult and realizing not everything in life is black and white, but a lot of grey and that depends upon a perspective of the individual. Even the identifying nature of evil resonates as one compares Palpatine with Sauron in The Lord of the Rings, Jadis, The White Witch in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe as well as the most evil thing in the world, the pursuit of power for power's sake as seen in Orwell's 1984. Lucas did humanity a great service that not even he fully realizes in my opinion.

THE VINYL REVIVAL Fascinating documentary from the makers of Last Shop Standing exploring the renaissance in all things vinyl

THE VINYL REVIVAL

Fascinating documentary from the makers of Last Shop Standing exploring the renaissance in all things vinyl

Arriving on DVD on April 10th via Wienerworld (UK)

Includes interviews from Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Philip Selway (Radiohead), Ade Utley (Portishead), Joel Gion (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), The Orielles, CASSIA and many more

From the makers of the acclaimed Last Shop Standing, this new film, The Vinyl Revival, charts the amazing revival of vinyl over the past several years. The film explores the whys and hows with industry pundits, artists, record shop owners, vinyl fans and many more.

Directed and produced by Pip Piper, we hear from passionate new record shop owners as well the established die-hards still going and thriving. The film discusses the importance of the record shop and vinyl as a whole. We answer the why's of vinyl's revival, the human need for belonging, the love of history and the stories of how the humble little record shop has shaped so many lives.

Record collecting has lost its image as a hobby for middle-aged men and become instead a pursuit of the most fashion-conscious consumer. Will it last? What is the future for record shops when vinyl becomes less fashionable? Why are we in danger of another record shop decline? Why must we support these bastions of culture?

Features an 8 page booklet chronicling the making of the film, with contributions from director Pip Piper (Last Shop Standing) and author Graham Jones.

"The vinyl record is the equivalent of whether you have the tea bag or the Japanese tea ceremony; the tea ceremony is the right way to approach music."
Nick Mason, Pink Floyd

"It's a Lazarus moment."
Phil Barton of Sister Ray and ERA
