NEWS: TBS greenlights "The Guestbook" and "Tarantula" and orders "World's End" pilot

TBS Greenlights The Guest Book from Greg Garcia And First Original Primetime Animated Series, Tarantula,

From Carson Mell and Rough House Pictures

TBS also Orders pilot for Jonathan Ames Comedy World's End,
Starring Hamish Linklater and Wanda Sykes and executive-produced by Ben Silverman,
And unveils launch plans for new comedies People of Earth and Search Party

TBS's stable of original comedies is about to expand. The top-rated Turner network has greenlit two new series and ordered another to pilot. Getting straight-to-series orders are The Guest Book, a scripted comedy created by Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia (My Name is Earl, Raising Hope), and produced by CBS Television Studios, and Tarantula, from creator Carson Mell (Silicon Valley) and Rough House Pictures, the network's first original primetime animated series under the new TBS brand. Both series are slated to launch in 2017. TBS has also ordered a pilot for World's End, a scripted comedy from Electus, writer/executive producer Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death) and executive producer Ben Silverman (Jane the Virgin), with Hamish Linklater (The Big Short) and Wanda Sykes (Black-ish) set to star.

In other programming news, TBS has set Halloween night, Monday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), for the premiere of its other-worldly ensemble comedy People of Earth, starring Wyatt Cenac (The Daily Show). TBS also has a unique launch plan in store for the new series Search Party. In order to capitalize on the Thanksgiving week with a captive young audience, TBS will air the entire first season of Search Party during the holiday (Nov. 21-25), with two episodes each night from 11 p.m. to midnight (ET/PT). To build interest even further, TBS will encore the first season during the weeks of Christmas and New Year's, while also making all 10 episodes available on demand the night of premiere to encourage binge viewing.

Today's announcements mark the latest phase in TBS's programming and brand evolution, which began in January with the premiere of Angie Tribeca and continued with the debuts of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee in February, The Detour in April and Wrecked in June. As a result, TBS now claims four of cable's Top 10 new comedies for the year-to-date, with Wrecked and The Detourtopping the list.

"Our new projects, from some of the best creators and producers in the industry, will fit perfectly with the new direction we've been taking the TBS brand," said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of programming for TBS. "Each show brings something fresh and unique to the comedy genre, from the unforgettable characters that Greg has created in The Guest Book to the wild, animated absurdities of Carson’s Tarantula. We also can't wait to see how the envelope-pushing audacity of our World's End pilot plays out on screen."

The following is a rundown of the three new projects joining TBS's production and development slate:

TBS Signs The Guest Book

For several years, Greg Garcia (My Name is Earl, Raising Hope) has been writing fictitious stories in the guest books of various rental cabins in an effort to freak out the next renters. He has always dreamed of having these stories come to life on screen, and now they will in the new TBS original comedy series The Guest Book.

Garcia brings his quirky, signature single-camera comedy to this anthology series centering on a small town vacation home and its visitors. While the house and cast of characters living in this small mountain town remain the same, each episode will feature a different set of guests renting the house. TBS has ordered 10 episodes of The Guest Book, all of which are being written by Garcia.

The Guestbook is a co-production of CBS Television Studios and Turner's Studio T, the in-house studio that produces and owns original content airing on TBS and TNT. Garcia serves as executive producer on the series, which is slated to launch on TBS in 2017.

Animated Comedy TarantulaComing to TBS

Marking its first original primetime animated series under the network's new brand, TBS has greenlit Tarantula, a half-hour comedy about the residents of the Tierra Chula Resident Hotel (aka "The Tarantula"). The series centers on Echo Johnson, a respected but uncertified tattoo artist who delivers absurd yet introspective monologues. Echo's poetic ramblings spin tales of misadventures with the other residents, as they partake in party crashing, dumpster diving and other socially dubious acts of mischief.

Tarantula is created and written by Carson Mell (Silicon Valley). It is a co-production of Rough House Pictures and Turner's Studio T, with Danny McBride (Vice Principals)Jody Hill (Vice Principals), David Gordon Green (Vice Principals) and Brandon James (Vice Principals) serving as executive producers. TBS has ordered an open-ended run for the series, which will join the network's lineup in 2017.

World's End Ordered to Pilot

TBS has ordered a pilot for World's End, a half-hour comedy pilot written by Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death)and starring Hamish Linklater (The Big Short,) and Wanda Sykes (Black-ish).

World's End follows Henry Mueller (Linklater), a charismatic high school English teacher who has a breakdown and is committed to a mental institution. There, under the watchful eye of Louise Baldwin (Sykes), he begins to feel "sane." Henry starts to question the system and the methods used to contain the inmates, ultimately becoming the leader of an inmate revolt. It's a dark comedy about an asylum that operates like a family, and as in all families, the question of who is sane and who is not is open for discussion.

World's End is based on an original Sagafilm television format. The pilot is a co-production of Electus and Turner's Studio T and is being executive-produced by Ames, Ben Silverman (Jane the Virgin), Stephanie Davis (Bored to Death) and Sean Canino (Jane the Virgin), along with Alan Poul (The Newsroom), who will also direct.

TNT greenlights new series with Charles Barkley, orders "Monsters of God" pilot and renews "The Last Ship" for season 4

TNT Greenlights Series from NBA Legend and Provocateur Charles Barkley

Network also Orders Pilot for Rod Lurie Drama Monsters of God
And Commissions Fourth Season of the Epic Drama The Last Ship

Premiere Dates for New Drama Good Behavior
And Season Three of the Fantasy Hit The Librarians Announced

TNT, a division of Turner, has given the greenlight to a provocative new series with NBA legend and Inside the NBA analyst Charles Barkley. Slated to premiere in early 2017, The Race Card (working title) will follow Barkley as he goes on a personal journey to explore and understand why our country is so divided right now. TNT has also ordered a pilot for Rod Lurie's post-Civil War drama Monsters of God, from Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment. And the hit action-adventure series The Last Ship will be back for a fourth season next summer.

TNT is in the midst of evolving its original programming slate, starting this past June with the premiere of the critically acclaimed hit Animal Kingdom. The evolution will continue later this year with Good Behavior, starring Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery in a no-holds-barred performance as a complicated woman trying to regain her life. Good Behavior is slated to premiere Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

In addition to Good Behavior, TNT's fall slate will include the third season of the hit fantasy drama The Librarians, starring Rebecca RomijnChristian KaneLindy BoothJohn KimJohn Larroquette and Noah WyleThe Librarians season three is set to premiere Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

Monsters of God joins two other pilots in the works at TNT: Civil, starring Bradley Whitford (The West Wing)Toby Jones (Captain America: Winter Soldier), Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), Enrique Murciano (Bloodline), as well as guest stars Eliza Coupe(Quantico) and Brian D'Arcy James(Spotlight) in a gripping political and social drama that finds America on the brink of a modern day Civil War, and Claws, starring Niecy Nash(Getting On), Harold Perrineau (Lost) and Jenn Lyon (Justified) in a wickedly funny dramedy set in a Florida nail salon.

"We're creating premium shows that are also unapologetically entertaining, whether it's through the tenuous and unexpected relationship in Good Behavior, the hard-hitting action of The Last Ship, or Monsters of God, our version of a western chock-full of violence, sex and insane characters," said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT.

"When it comes to unscripted programming, we're going to venture into new territory with unique subjects and formats not found anywhere else," said Michael Bloom, TNT and TBS's newly appointed senior vice president of unscripted series & specials. "With his enormous popularity and outspoken, sometimes controversial views, Charles is the perfect choice to kick off this new strategy."

Below are the complete details for today's TNT news about The Race Card greenlight, Monsters of Godpilot and The Last Ship renewal.

TNT Greenlights The Race Card

NBA legend and Inside the NBAanalyst Charles Barkley has had enough. The America that he knew has lost its way, becoming mired in partisan politics, social divides and entrenched corporate interests. Now he hopes to get to the root of the problem in the new limited-run series The Race Card. TNT has ordered six hour-long episodes of the show, with plans to launch in early 2017.

In The Race Card, Charles Barkley wants to bust up the echo chamber mentality that so often has people retreating to corners of the like-minded, where views are reinforced and ideas are distorted into angry, unexamined groupthink conclusions. Each week, Barkley will take on the rapidly calcifying positions around today’s hot-button topics. He will seek out the sharpest and most varied viewpoints from today’s cultural leaders and tastemakers. He will then challenge and probe those ideas, even trying them out on himself.

No idea presented on The Race Cardwill be left in the abstract. Barkley will put ideas on their feet, with real-world proof-of-concept tests that will engage people and expose the truth behind their closely held beliefs. In the end, Barkley will reach his own conclusions guided only by his own wits and common-sense wisdom.

"We as Americans never discuss the issue of race in this country and how it impacts everything in our lives until something bad happens," Barkley said. "I see this project as a way to talk about race, class and cultural differences and challenge everyone's status quo."

The Race Card is a Studio Tproduction in association with DocShop Inc. and Kin Studios. Studio T is Turner's in-house studio which produces and owns original content airing on TNT and TBS. Serving as executive producers on The Race Card are Charles BarkleyLee GaitherMarc Perman and Emmy® winner Dan Partland(Intervention), who oversaw the acclaimed documentary series The Sixties for TNT's sister network CNN.

TNT Orders Monsters of GodPilot

TNT has greenlit a pilot for Monsters of God, a post-Civil War drama from Rod Lurie (The Contender) and Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment for Turner's Studio T. Lurie wrote the script and serves as executive producer and director on the pilot. Also serving as executive producer is Lurie's partner at Battle Plan ProductionsMarc Frydman, and Plan B's DeDe GardnerJeremy Kleiner and Sarah Esberg.

In Monsters of God, savagery and violence are the cornerstones of Colonel "Terrible" Bill Lancaster's holy war against the Comanche in post-Civil War Texas. Despite the peaceful co-existence between the Comanche and local townspeople, Lancaster sets out on a quest to kill off every single member of the tribe, bringing wild chaos to the town of Slater. Meanwhile, his wife, Cynthia Lancaster, will let no one get in the way of her obsessive quest to institute her wildly feminist ideals, even if she has to challenge the United States Army and make her own allegiance with the Comanche women. Whether by force or free will, change is coming to Texas, and the escalating insanity will reveal humanity at its most monstrous.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Lurie served as an artillery officer in the U.S. Army before moving into the entertainment industry first as a reporter, then as a writer and director. While serving in the Army, Lurie spent a great deal of time and energy studying the Comanche Wars, which serve as the historical backdrop for Monsters of God.

TNT's The Last Ship Gets S4 Renewal

TNT has ordered 13 episodes for a fourth season of The Last Ship to air next summer. Eric DaneAdam Baldwin and Bridget Regan star in the series' third season, along with Charles ParnellTravis Van WinkleMarissa NeitlingChristina ElmoreJocko SimsBren Fosterand Kevin Michael Martin.

Based on William Brinkley's popular novel, The Last Ship chronicles a global catastrophe that nearly decimates the world's population. Because of its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James avoided falling victim to the devastating tragedy. But now, CO Captain Tom Chandler (Dane) and his crew must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the few remaining survivors.

In its third season, The Last Ship is reaching an average of 7.6 million viewers per episode across all platforms. New episodes premiere Sundays at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on TNT.  Fans can catch up on episodes from the first half of season three through TNT On Demand and the TNT website and mobile app. Past seasons are currently available on Blu-Ray and DVD, as well as on Hulu.

The third season of The Last Ship is a production of Turner's Studio T in association with Platinum Dunes, whose partners – blockbuster filmmaker Michael BayBrad Fuller and Andrew Form – serve as executive producers. Co-creators and showrunners Hank Steinbergand Steven Kane also serve as executive producers, along with directors Paul Holahan and Michael Katleman.

TBS Greenlights Digital Animated Series Storyville And Begins Development on Notorious B.I.G.-Inspired Series

Projects Kick Off New Content Partnership between Mass Appeal and TBS & TNT

TBS, a division of Turner, has greenlit Storyville, a new digital animated series co-created by OkayPlayer. The top-rated network is also in development on Think B.I.G., a scripted series based loosely on lyrics by the late, great Notorious B.I.G. The two projects are the first to emerge from a new strategic content partnership between TBS & TNT and New York-based content and media organization Mass Appeal.

TBS has ordered 10 episodes of Storyville, which is already in production. Created and produced by Mass Appeal in partnership with Okayplayer, the digital animated series will feature funny, absurd, weird, and sometimes just sheer joyful stories straight from the mouths of top celebrities. Musicians, actors, comedians, writers and artists will tell true life stories which will be animated in rich detail, exposing the sheer absurdity of celebrity life in all of its glory. Storyville will premiere this fall across TBS digital and social platforms. A pilot of the series is available for viewing at https://youtu.be/WfhoI6iX5ng.

TBS is also developing Think B.I.G., a scripted series chronicling the misadventures of an inner-city teen desperately trying to create a better future for his daughter and infant son. The plotlines for Think B.I.G. will be loosely based on the lyrics of Notorious B.I.G. The project is being produced and created by Mass Appeal, in partnership with Wayne Barrow of Bystorm Films and Voletta Wallace for Notorious B.I.G. Inc.

"Storyville and Think B.I.G. speak to the types of projects we will cultivate with Mass Appeal moving forward," said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS. "Mass Appeal is a leader in developing unique stories with diverse voices. There's no better partner for us to connect with this vibrant, impassioned audience."

TBS's new projects are part of a larger deal with Mass Appeal, which has been creating compelling content that reflects the American urban landscape since 1996. Under the agreement, Mass Appeal will develop original programming for TBS & TNT's television and digital platforms, presenting concepts on an exclusive, first-look basis. Mass Appeal will also provide creative consultation on programming already in development, work with the networks in crafting original music solutions and licensing tracks from Mass Appeal Records; and developing music-themed specials and unscripted programs aimed at giving viewers an all-access pass to a colorful and unique urban landscape that's as eclectic as it is revolutionary.

"The new direction that the good folks at TBS are taking is inspiring and totally akin to our position on popular culture," said Sacha Jenkins, Mass Appeal partner and chief creative officer. "In essence, Mass Appeal's strength lies in our ability to articulate the innermost feelings of artists and revolutionaries who are in the throes of their most potent creative moments, in a manner that is true to the creators and the movements they help spawn. I think our marriage will produce programming that will inspire a huge cross-section of people to tune in, interact and, in the case of TBS, laugh their asses off."

Peter Bittenbender, CEO of Mass Appeal, added, "This deal is a major turning point for our business. With the help of Turner, we will now be able to accelerate our vision of growing Mass Appeal into the premier brand for exploring and expanding urban culture. We look forward to helping inspire cultural ingenuity at TBS & TNT."

The deal was negotiated by Mark Ankner and Jad Dayeh at WME.
