FILMRISE RELEASES JESSIE AURITT’S EMPOWERING
AND INSPIRATIONAL DOCUMENTARY ABOUT A
NINE-YEAR OLD FEMALE POWERLIFTER
“SUPERGIRL”
ON DEMAND, DVD AND BLU-RAY
“Supergirl promises to be a fascinating portrait of what it really means to be strong for a young person in the 21st century.” – Indiewire
Brooklyn, NY –August 28 , 2017 – This September, FilmRise releases Jessie Auritt’s feature film debut, the unique coming of age story of nine-year-old Naomi Kutin – an Orthodox Jewish girl from New Jersey who is breaking powerlifting world records. Auritt, the award-winning filmmaker – her prior film, “The Birdman” won the Grand Jury Prize for Short Documentary at Slamdance – follows this extraordinary young girl as she competes to maintain her athletic title. Entering into the trying phase of adolescence, Naomi juggles her powerlifting training while adhering to her family’s strict, traditional Jewish obligations. “Supergirl” will be available for sale and rental on Amazon Video, iTunes, and Vudu, as well as DVD and Blu-ray on September 28, 2017.
Within the backdrop of religious guidelines dictating female and male gender rules, Naomi Kutin is breaking records. As a young girl raised in an Orthodox household, Naomi’s role is clearly defined. However, with her family’s support, she is not only breaking records, she is also breaking the mold, both in her religion and her sport. She has become an international phenomenon as her extraordinary talent brings her into the limelight as one of the strongest girls in the world – powerlifting close to three times her weight – all this within a male dominated sport. “Supergirl” follows pre-teen Naomi from her emergence as powerlifting champion at the age of ten, through her following three years: training to uphold her athletic title; preparing for her Bat-Mitzvah; and attending Yeshiva (Orthodox Jewish school).
From her strict religious obligations, to cyber-bullying and health issues which could jeopardize her powerlifting future, Supergirl must learn to accept herself and discover she is as strong inside as she is outside. An Official Selection at Slamdance, Doc NYC, and The Hamptons International Film Festival, “Supergirl” received wide critical acclaim, including “…a health tonic for this cramping climate of resurgent sexism underway where girls everywhere are struggling to understand their worth” from Playlist, and “…what makes this film truly interesting is the unflinching way she (Auritt) approaches the sensitive topic of how everyone will feel if Naomi can no longer powerlift, or perhaps more importantly, win tournaments” from Hammer to Nail.
“Supergirl” has a run time of 80 Minutes and is Not Rated.
