The worst thing a writer can experience is writing a beautiful introduction to anything and then lose the entire amount of work and time to an accident that reduces the words to nothing. That just happened to me. I can’t recapture what I want to say because the emotion is still there, but the articulation and experience have passed. Ironically that is not unlike a metaphor for Babylon, a tale of archetypal dreamers who reach points where they are seemingly on top of the mountain, only to fall down the slope through excess, debauchery and unsustainable expectations.
The silent film star (Brad Pitt), young starlet (Margot Robbie), production executive (Diego Calva), musical sensation (Jovan Adepo) and powerhouse performer (Li Jin Li) struggle to maintain relevance in 1920s Hollywood that is already leaving them behind.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc edition of Babylon features a solid 2160p widescreen resolution with balanced black levels, outstanding depth of field, and a fine grain that gives it a cinematic look for the digital age. Colors and flesh tones are vibrant yet natural. The English DolbyATMOS Soundtrack is nuanced and well mixed. French and Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks are encoded along with English Subtitkes for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as English, Cantonese, Danish, Spanish, French, Korean, Mandarin, Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish and Thai Language Subtitles encoded as options.
Housed within the steel book packaging are one 4K UHD BD, two 1080p full HD Blu-ray Discs and a limited time only insert for redemption of a digital copy. Extra value features are on the second of the two full HD discs and include a 30 minute documentary on the fifteen year road it took to bring Babylon to the big screen with cast and crew giving insight along the way. There are also featurettes covering the costuming (2:51), score (1:50) and deleted and extended scenes (9:15).
With a more than three hour running time, Babylon is as ambitious, but not as excessive as the characters it illustrates. Babylon will debut on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc + Blu-ray Disc + Digital Copy Three-Disc Steel Book Set on March 21, 2023 courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment.
