A slow evolution in the Horror genre. Some thoughts.

Have you seen Midsommar and Hereditary? Both are written and directed by the same filmmaker and they could almost be companion pieces in some ways as they both deal with conversions as well as arcane knowledge and or the occult. I don't want to explain any more since I don't want to reveal any spoilers. However, I found them to be well made and visually interesting with a great build up in tension and some truly horrifying moments. If one has seen some recently released films like The Lighthouse, The Witch and even The Neon Demon, I think that this could be a breakaway trend in horror cinema that evolves over time whether it is the slasher flicks of the 1980s and the meta slasher flicks of the 1990s, the serial killer thrillers of the 1990s and the zombie movies of the 2000s. Are we moving away from one kind of supernatural horror trend like all those found footage pictures or are we not? The torture porn films appear to have run their course too. It will be interesting to see what reaction Grettle and Hansel gets in the next few weeks. These contemporary films remind me of older classics like Rosemary's Baby, The Tennant and The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee. One can only guess and be grateful the horror is acted out on the screen and not directly effecting the viewer's life.
