Off all the DCEU television series on the air, I make it no secret that my favorite is Gotham. In fact it is not only my favorite, Gotham is also one of the best television shows on free over the air American television period. The show that when I first heard about it a bit over two years ago, I thought would never last ended up being the best. Again I have to credit Bruno Heller for helping the bring this series to fruition and the excellent casting personnel, who have picked a simply amazing group of people to portray these iconic characters.
David Mazouz has an amazing sense of integrity and maturity about him that I think he is by far the best Actor to portray a young boy Bruce Wayne ever on both the big and small screens. Sean Pertwee is an amazing Alfred Pennyworth and he helps bring Mazouz' Wayne down to Earth so that while the viewer can believe that young Bruce Wayne was this amazing noble boy, he is still a boy and as a result he is prone to doing things that kids do, like disobeying authority figures. Robin Lord Taylor owns the role of Penguin in this incarnation and Cory Michael Smith seems to be making his portrayal of Edward Nygma his own too.
Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue bring some great shifting chemistry as Detectives Gordon and Bullock while the addition of Michael Chiklis as Gotham Police Department Captain Barnes brings some extra gravitas to the show too. Honestly, I think the casting is nothing short of top shelf all around so if any names are left out, it is not because of any lack of faith in their talents.
The overall story arc for the second season covers the plot to kill Bruce Wayne to avenge an ancient family feud by Gotham's new Mayor Theo Galavan (James Frain) and the mad experiments of Hugo Strange (BD Wong) as well as Wayne's attempt to find his parents' killer, which attracts the attention of an elite Gotham secret society.
Guest stars this season include Cameron Monaghan, Carole Kane, Raul Castillo, Michael Bowen, Paul Reubens and Jada Pinkett Smith.
There are lots of bonus features in this set that include the actors behind their villainous characters discussing their respective delemmas in season two, select cast members looking back on their characters' comic book origins, a look ahead for the characters of Gotham, the 2015 Comic-Con Panel and how the show's signature noir look is achieved. Please note that I have only touched upon a few of the extras to be found on these four discs. There are over 90 minutes of special features to be discovered and explored. An insert containing season episode information and disc contents is included within the Blue BD Case along with a limited time only redeemable coupon for an Ultraviolet Digital Copy of the second season of Gotham. As with other Warner TV on BD sets, the case comes housed in an attractive cardboard slipcase.
All twenty two season two episodes of Gotham are presented in a luxurious 1080p full HD (1.78:1) aspect ratio with an explosive English DTS-HD MA 5.1 Soundtrack and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded as options.
