Karma River: A Backrooms Short by Mark Rivera

Karma River: A Backrooms Short by Mark Rivera

"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world." — Merlin, Excalibur (1981)

What happens when our hidden malice, jealousy, and unresolved samskaras (the impressions of our intent) manifest into physical space?

In Karma River, the Backrooms are not a random glitch in reality, and they aren't just a maze of yellow walls. They are a reactive, psychological mirror. They operate on imperfect memory, collective unconscious, and electricity. When you carry toxic intentions into the world, the environment responds. It knows you are there before you even arrive, and it will forge the instruments of your fate. You cannot run from what you create.

This non-linear short film was fully conceptualized, improvised in four parts, and edited on a mobile phone using YouTube Create and CapCut. This project stands as an experiment in using synthetic intelligence as a tool to democratize storytelling—allowing a lone creator to map the geometry of human conscience and delusion with zero budget.

The story is mine. The architecture is a reflection.

Look closely at the screen. Look closely at the words. Everything is connected. Can you solve the loop?

Directed and Written by Mark Rivera.
