The Handmaid's Tale Episodes 207 and 208 Review

One of the best genre shows on streaming television is The Handmaid's Tale on HULU. I have screen the seventh and eight episodes of The Handmaid's Tale, which will premiere respective on premiere on Wednesday May 30, 2018 and Wednesday June 6, 2018 respectively on HULU. The reason why I chose to wait was it was difficult to write about this episode without seeing the most recent episodes. Even now I am quite concerned about revealing spoilers, especially since I prefer not to write "spoiler reviews" for any film or TV program. So if you are not yet up to date, please stop now. I will do a 10 to 1 countdown now so you can return later and not worry about having anything revealed to you that has not yet streamed officially.

Following the bombing, anyone under suspicion is being round up and executed. In Gilead when a Commander is found guilty, it is possible that the entire family will be wiped out and all the servants are executed too. As a result Offred and everyone related to the Commander is in danger by a rival Commander assigned to find the culprit, but in reality is really more interested in framing the Commander in order to succeed him. With the Commander critical in the hospital, both Offred and Serena must set aside differences in order to survive. The following episode continues the storyline where by we see how fortunes can change in Gilead for meek and the powerful and both episodes serve as fantastic bookends for what good deeds can warrant while setting something up subtly that has been going on all season, but I believe will come to fruition in the next two episodes to come, which are the last for this season.
As can be expected, The Handmaid's Tale looks more cinematic than most network television dramas and though it can be very bleak, the acting and the storytelling are top notch and carries the concept through to fruition beautifully. So do not forget to tune in and stream this amazing HULU original series.

Quick-View: Solo: A Star Wars Story

What a lackluster movie? Solo might be the dreariest Star Wars film ever released. It looks uninspired and feels lame. The production design all looks the same for all of the settings and generally speaking is simply ugly. The planets are not interesting because it is like traveling to one junkyard world to another. The film had no mystique and no truly interesting villains. Even the Empire seems like a bad cartoon villain here. So are they evil just for the sake of being evil or maybe they would be far more interesting if the Empire actually comes off as though it's officers actually believe what they are doing is correct as opposed to just having every imperial be a one dimensional black hatted villain in a film that is a sea of flat black hats. Shoehorning Darth Maul at the end felt forced and contrived, especially when considering the character's trajectory in both The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. The effects for some of the creatures looked surprisingly bad for both practical and CGI and a lot of the background elements were just reused pieces slightly dressed up to appear different, but ultimately, they just contributed to the film appearing cheap. Howard's direction is uninspired and Clint Howard's obligatory cameo stuck out too much like a soar thumb and was annoying rather than fun. Overall, this is the weakest of the Star Wars films released in the Disney era and one that needed a lot more thought and development. Lucasfilm could learn a lot from Marvel Studios on how to plan out a franchise so that the individual pieces feel complete and yet it feels like this has been merticulousky planned out as opposed to being tossed out without any real plan out in place.

Hammer's House of Horror at the Quad

Hammer's House of Horror
Part I: The Classic Years 1956–1967

May 30 - June 19

It's a chilling season at the Quad! Brace yourself for mummies, vampires, werewolves, and more with our extensive two-part retrospective celebrating Britain's genre studio powerhouse, Hammer Films

With 32 titles in the first installment (22 on 35mm), including Frankenstein Created Woman, The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, and The Quatermass Experiment

Look forward to Part II (1967-76) this July, with highlights including: Frankenstein and the Monster from HellDr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde, and The Vampire Lover.

Throughout film history, many countries have had their own point-of-pride movie studios; Britain can claim several, whether as backlots or sites of creative capital. In Hammer Films, a genre-oriented counterpart to Ealing Films, the UK could boast of one with all that and more; Hammer’s output in the second half of the 20th century sent aesthetic and sensory frissons throughout the nation while influencing pop culture and world cinema. Although synonymous with horror, the Hammer library was stocked from the beginning with films of all kinds. Founded in November 1934 as Hammer Film Productions and based in London, the studio came out of the gate with dramas and then specialized in “B” pictures and homegrown tales, pausing only for WWII. A turning point came in the mid-1950s with a move into genre fare with an accent on the Gothic, and this first crop of titles in the Quad’s extensive two-part Hammer retrospective demonstrates that—as Universal Pictures had found in the 1930s—famous monsters were a good (and generally inexpensive) way to expand your industry footprint. Hammer finally made its first color movie in 1954; a good thing, too, since what would the next quarter-century of movies have been like without all that scarlet sanguinary screen imagery?

"If we saw the logo of Hammer Films, we knew it was a very special picture. We knew it was a certain kind of film. A surprising experience, usually—and shocking." — Martin Scorsese
