Scrooged Blu-ray Disc Review

Bill Murray has had an amazing career from being one of the original Not Ready For Prime Time Players on SNL to his many collaborations with Wes Anderson. The man has become a legend not only on screen, but also off screen. There is even an art gallery exhibit celebrating the man. In the late 1980s, Murray had a bit of a slump with Ghostbusters II and the Richard Donner directed comedy Scrooged. Essentially a post Yuppie comedy take on the classic Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, but despite the ensemble cast, which includes Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Alfre Woodward, David Johansson, Michael J. Pollard, and Mabel King as well as cameos by John Houseman, Robert Goulet, Jamie Farr, Buddy Hackett, John Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, Lee Majors, Pat McCormick, Mary Lou Retton, Anne Ramsey, and Paul Shaffer, Scrooged maybe a cult Christmas classic, but it was not one of Murray's better films. The film does have a quick pace, which helps it a lot. The ending also redeems the film in a heartwarming way as it should be, complete with Bill Murray breaking the fourth wall and addressing the movie theater audience directly to sing “Put A Little Love In Your Heart.”

The 1080p Full HD presentation of Scrooged looks fantastic with nice deep blacks and solid colors that pop. The English DTS-HD MA  Soundtrack does not fair as well because it feels kind of restrained. The standard definition version on the included DVD features a clear 16 By 9 enhanced picture quality with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack. Both versions feature French Dolby 2.0 Soundtracks, as well as English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. The Blu-ray Disc also features a Spanish Language Mono Soundtrack and English, French, Spanish Language Subtitles while an English Dolby Surround Soundtrack is on the DVD too.

The theatrical trailer is the only extra content on the Blu-ray Disc and within the blue BD case there is a limited time only redeemable code on the insert for a digital copy of the film. Scrooged is available now on Blu-ray Disc at retailers on and offline courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment. Happy Holidays.
