SYFY ACQUIRES NEW ORIGINAL SERIES DARK MATTER FROM THE PRODUCERS OF LOST GIRLAND THE WRITERS OF STARGATE

ENDEMOL TO DISTRIBUTE INTERNATIONALLY

NEW YORK – October 15, 2014 – Syfytoday announced it has acquired the new original series Dark Matter, which will be produced by Prodigy Pictures (Lost Girl, XIII) and created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie (Stargate franchise).  

 

The 13 one-hour episodes will be based on the graphic novel Dark Matter by Mallozzi and Mullie, published by Dark Horse Comics, and will air on Syfy in 2015.

 

Executive producers are Jay Firestone, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie and Vanessa Piazza. The series will be distributed internationally by Endemol Worldwide Distribution.

 

In Dark Matter, the crew of a derelict spaceship is awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal and hidden secrets.

In making the announcement, Chris Regina, Senior Vice President, Programming, Syfy, said: “Dark Matter is a refreshing and entertaining space opera that blends an intriguing premise with fast-paced suspense. It will be a terrific addition to our prime time schedule next year.”

WALKING DEAD STAR NORMAN REEDUS TO RECEIVE ACHIEVEMENT IN ACTING AWARD AT 13^TH ANNUAL NYC HORROR FILM FESTIVAL, NOV. 13–16, 2014!

 

New York, NY – Oct. 13, 2014. The 13^th edition of the New York City Horror Film Festival celebrates two stalwarts of the genre with a Lifetime Achievement Award presented to 88-year-old Phantasm series star, “Tall Man” Angus Scrimm, and The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus receiving the Achievement in Acting Award for his strong dedication to the craft, currently creating new heights, and depths, as everyone’s favorite crossbow-wielding zombie-killer Daryl Dixon.

 

Award recipient Norman Reedus is internationally known for the role of Daryl Dixon in AMC’s immensely popular series, now entering its fifth season. Roles for Guillermo del Toro in MIMIC and BLADE 2 have led to the upcoming dark videogame SILENT HILL, co-directed by Hideo Kajima. Norman will also soon be seen in AIR with costar Djimon Hounsou, and John Hillcoat’s TRIPLE NINE featuring Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

 

Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Angus Scrimm received instant worldwide recognition for his frightening performance as The Tall Man in Don Coscarelli’s classic PHANTASM. Returning to the series over the course of five films, Angus also lent his talent to many features including Jim Wynorski’s THE LOST EMPIRE and CHOPPING MALL, and Don Coscarelli’s JOHN DIES AT THE END with Paul Giamatti.

 

The festival runs Nov. 13–16, 2014, at Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick St., in Manhattan. 13 features and 32 shorts, 5 World and 13 New York Premieres, include FEAR CLINIC starring Robert Englund and Slipknot’s Corey Taylor; Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly’s TALES OF POE with Adrienne King and Caroline Williams; Dead By Dawn award-winner HOUSEBOUND, and Andres Torres’ BAG BOY LOVER BOY, and films from New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Britain, and Portugal.

 

The NYC Horror Film Festival was born in 2002 by filmmaker Michael J. Hein as a venue for newer independent horror filmmaking. After Michael’s passing in 2011, the festival created the Michael J. Hein Achievement Award to celebrate the hard work and perseverance of creators in the field. George Romero was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, followed by other classic scaremeisters including Tom Savini, Tobe Hooper, Roger Corman, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Frank Henenlotter, Robert Englund, Wes Craven, and Stuart Gordon.

NEW YORK— October 13, 2014. Syfyannounced today it is partnering with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Pearl Street Films and CBS Television Studios to develop Incorporated, a futuristic espionage thriller set in a world where corporations have seemingly unlimited power. This will be the story of one man’s efforts to beat the system.

 

David and Alex Pastor (“Selfless”, “The Last Days”) will write the pilot. Ted Humphrey (“The Good Wife”) will serve as executive producer/showrunner, with Damon, Affleck and Jennifer Todd also executive producing.  Pearl Street Film’s Margaret Chernin will serve as associate producer

A Hollow Screenplay Takes The Fear Out Of Hollows Grove.

Hollows Grove is an upcoming found footage horror picture that details the tragic circumstances surrounding a documentary filmmaker's excursion into a haunted orphanage where friends of his, who have a "Ghost Hunters" like program, have decided to focus upon because of the stories of children experimented upon by uncaring Doctors, the suicide of two nurses and a kid who went on a killing spree inside.

The film features Lance Henriksen in what is little more than a cameo, although he is given some ironic opening dialogue that makes one wish he was featured throughout the entire film. This is a low budget independent haunted horror story that features some nifty effects and a capable cast of young actors, but the script is weak and generic. 

What little information that is given by the characters does not offer enough of a mythology to capture the viewer's imagination. Instead you get a few throw away cliches that add nothing new to the already overused found footage sub genre and pretty much I did not find myself caring very much for any of the characters because they behave exactly as one expects them to behave. They are flat and when the shit hits the fan it becomes a by the numbers countdown of character deaths. 

If one had a greater understanding about the kids, the orphanage/hospital and the motivations and or greater history of the evil concentrated within then at least I might feel some sympathy. Instead what I see are people behaving irresponsibly in a situation when the moment something goes wrong, anyone with a half a brain would get out of the place pronto. Why the spirits do what they do and how they choose to do it seems random at best. One has to ask what are the rules here? How far do these ghosts have dominion over? Is it the place itself and is it concentrated sentient evil energy or a kind of broken record that is triggered when people touch things and go places they have no business being involved in? Besides a few brief disjointed stories, I felt as though what was going on had no purpose. 

Even ghosts, demons, and monsters have to have an agenda that clearly can be understood by the audience. Watch "The Blair Witch Project" and you get a pretty clear understanding of what the legend is, who the person was before being accused of witchcraft, what she was said to have done, and why she may still be haunting the woods. People bought that mythology up so much that they thought it was real.

All I kept asking myself while watching this film was "why?" The last scene while intended to give a shock only cheapened the story more and took whatever credibility it had with it.

Good effects and some expressive cast members ultimately stumble because of an underdeveloped script. Hollows Grove will debut on iTunes as well as on the film's website www.hollowsgrove.com on October 21, 2014.

Utilizing a dangerous and untested method of time travel, he journeys from 2043 to the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will all but annihilate the human race. The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Atlas Entertainment, producer of the original theatrical film.
