ELLA at age 3 being interviewed in a scene from the Oscar® nominated short documentary HOW DO YOU MEASURE A YEAR? directed by Jay Rosenblatt

February 28, 2023

 IN JUNE 2023

FEBRUARY 28 2023, New York, NY   HBO Documentary Films has acquired worldwide and television streaming rights to the Academy Award®- nominated documentary short, HOW DO YOU MEASURE A YEAR?, from longtime HBO collaborator Jay Rosenblatt (HBO’s “When We Were Bullies,” “Phantom Limb,” “The Darkness of Day,” “Human Remains”). Coinciding with Father’s Day, the documentary will debut in June 2023 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

“I am thrilled HBO has acquired HOW DO YOU MEASURE A YEAR?,” says director Rosenblatt. “Given that HBO has debuted two previous films I made with my daughter, and much of my other work, they are the perfect home for this film and for me as a filmmaker.”

For 17 years, filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt filmed his daughter Ella on her birthday, asking her the same questions. In just 29 minutes, we watch her grow from a toddler to a young woman with all the beautiful and awkward stages in between. Each phase is captured fleetingly but makes an indelible mark. Her responses to her father’s questions are just a backdrop for a deeper story of parental love, acceptance, and ultimately, independence.

The Story

All Quiet On The Western Front tells the poignant story of a young German soldier on the Western Front during World War I.

Spring 1917. 17-year-old Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) and his friends are extremely eager to go to war, to beat the French soundly and march to Paris victorious. This is how the boys imagine it. This is the war they are promised by their principal in a rousing speech. With jubilation, fanfare and song, the “youth of iron” marches off – for Emperor, God and Fatherland.

The enthusiasm, however, does not last long. When they arrive at the Western Front after days of marching. It’s pouring rain. The trenches are filling up and fast becoming a swamp. But the French do not wait to attack. Flares rise up, brightening no-man's land with a surreal beauty. Until all hell breaks loose again and the French bombard the trenches.

What follows portrays Paul and his comrades’ first-hand experience of how the initial euphoria of war turns into horror, suffering and fear as they desperately fight for their lives in the trenches.

The Cast

Director Edward Berger (Patrick Melrose, Jack, Deutschland83) put together an impressive ensemble cast. The lead role of Paul Bäumer is played by a newcomer and theater-actor, Felix KammererAlbrecht Schuch (Lieber Thomas, Systemsprenger) takes on the role of Stanislaus Katczinsky, who becomes a close confidant to Paul during the war. Fighting alongside them are Edin Hasanovic (Je suis Karl, Skylines) as Tjaden Stackfleet, Aaron Hilmer (Das schönste Mädchen der Welt) as Albert Kropp, Moritz Klaus (Kleine Morde) as Franz Müller and Adrian Grünewald (Sløborn) as Ludwig Behm. Daniel Brühl (The Alienist - Die Einkreisung, Nebenan) strives for a truce as Matthias Erzberger. Devid Striesow (Ich bin dann mal weg) plays General Friedrichs. Other roles are played by Thibault De Montalembert (The Collapse), Anton von Lucke (Große Freiheit) and Andreas Döhler (Die Saat).

The Screenplay

The screenplay was written by Edward Berger, Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson. The film is produced on behalf of Netflix by Malte Grunert (Land of Mine, A Most Wanted Man) together with his company Amusement Park Film, Daniel Dreifuss (Sergio, Guernica) and Edward Berger. Rotoscope Style Motion Comic Space Opera Action.

In keeping with the style I used with another clip I posted online, the interior of the human Star fighters and starships are all presented with a comic color filter while the space scene exteriors are all presented with comic mono. For the interior of the alien ship I wanted to retain the graphic novel style, which in this the case the rule I established was all exteriors are comic mono and all interiors are comic color, but since the aliens breathe a different atmosphere that is green I processed the sequence three times so that the final clip accentuated the outlines and green glow of the alien eyes. This is the only sequence like this for the video. I also tweaked the GenreOnline.net logo to in a comic color filter overlay just for this video. This was done for demonstrative and entertainment purposes only. Thank you.

Devotion 4K UltraHD Blu-ray Disc Review

Jonathan Majors (Creed III) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) star in the inspirational true story of two elite US Navy fighter pilots who helped turn the tide in the most brutal battle in the Korean War. Jesse Brown, the first Black aviator in Navy history and his fellow fighter pilot and friend, Tom Hudner. Their heroic sacrifices and enduring friendship would ultimately make them the Navy's most celebrated wingmen.

Performance wise, Jonathan Majors is a great actor with lots of range. He was absolutely fantastic as He Who Remains during the first season of Loki and he was noteworthy on Lovecraft County. I cannot comment on his latest MCU motion picture because I have not seen it, but having seen the performance he turned in for Devotion I think it is safe to state we should be seeing him in more projects in the future. He is the draw for the film in my humble opinion and he was the reason why I wanted to see Devotion.

Paramount Home Entertainment presents Devotion on Blu-ray Disc with a 4K Ultra HD 2160p resolution with High Dynamic Range and faithful color reproduction and contrast that feels appropriate to the story since this is a period piece. An English DTS-HD MA Surround Soundtrack has both a clear and robots quality and impressive dialog clarity too. A Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded as options.

Two retrospective featurettes detailing the legacy of Jesse Brown and the Aviation expertise are included along with an insert containing a code for a free digital copy as well within the BD keep case.

Devotion 4K UltraHD Blu-ray Disc is available now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment.
