The Long Walk is the latest feature film adaptation to be released on Blu-ray disc based on a Stephen King story. The film is also one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King story made for the big screen that I have seen yet. Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson lead an ensemble cast that also includes Garrett Wareing and Mark Hamill as The Major. While I may not be able to give you every single name of every actor that appears in this film, I feel the majority of them were perfectly cast and whether the Actors were cast in small little roles in the background or larger character roles. I felt something for the characters in general and got a sense of the story and a sense of the bleak location in which the story takes place. Without going too far into the plot basically every year there’s a lottery and a certain amount of volunteers, one for each state, are allowed to participate in what is called The Long Walk. The rules are simple: the last person walking will receive a cash prize and a wish. Everyone else is executed when they fall below a certain amount of miles per hour walking speed regardless of the reason.
The picture quality on the Blu-ray Disc is fine. It captures the muted rustic quality of the film, and the English Dolby ATMOS Soundtrack is well rounded and at times very screen specific as far as the direction of the sound heard particularly when certain characters are retired from the long walk. Spanish and French Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks are provided along with an English Descriptive Audio Track for the Visually Impaired and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired coupled with French and Spanish Language Subtitles.
Towards towards the end of this month, the film will be made available at all retailers on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, but you can purchase it exclusively as a Steel book from Amazon.com. You can also purchase at Amazon or anywhere right now the film on 1080p full HD Blu-ray Disc. The special features include a true multi type part documentary about the making of the film which runs approximately one hour and 14 minutes and 12 seconds if you watch it using a play all feature. Two theatrical trailers; both under 2 1/2 minutes, are also included among the extra features and there is an insert with a code within the case for a digital copy redeemable at the address given on the insert for the limited time only.
Though it can be bleak, I really like this film. I really hope it develops an audience over the years to come because it is a good movie. The Long Walk is available now at retailers on and off-line on Blu-ray Disc and exclusively for now in steel book packaging and on 4K ultra HD Blu-ray disc exclusively at Amazon, as well as at digital copy retailers online depending on which your favorite provider may be.
