Hungry DVD Review.

Hungry is a survival horror film about a group of tourists in the Louisiana bayou who are terrorized and hunted by a hippopotamus. Now that premise should be schlock gold, but unfortunately Writer and Director James Nunn never fully embraces the concept to it’s full potential. Aura Entertainment was originally going to release Hungry as a straight to video on demand title, but because of the viral buzz-surrounding its poster and trailer, the distributor gave the film a limited theatrical-release. Some audience reviews have stated an appreciation for the lack of gore in the film and while gore alone does not make a movie scary, the concept alone demands an exploitive eye because of the set up and the potential directions one could’ve gone with it left this reviewer feeling as though Hungry never lives up to the hype. The film clearly states that hippopotamus are not carnivorous however, they are extremely territorial, dangerous and are responsible for a great many deaths in parts of Africa.

The historical context regarding Teddy Roosevelt’s real-life 1910 "Hippo Bill" (the New Foods Act) to import hippos into the Louisiana bayous to solve a meat shortage is the perfect setup for a creature feature. I watched this film with my older brother and throughout the entire film we both kept coming up with better ideas of how to execute things to make it more interesting than the film actually delivers. For instance, there is a point where they come across the remains of a shanty lab in the middle of the swamp where the hippos were originally bred, and instead of using this as a premise to develop the possibilities of making the hippos larger and more evolved than their African counterparts, maybe even a bit mutated to the extent that they really are carnivorous as opposed to simply being territorial could have beefed up the schlocky premise. As it is, the title of the film alone is not accurate since not once are any of the characters actually devoured by the hippopotamus, they are simply mauled by it. Hippos have an immense bite force and are capable of snapping large predators in half. Obscuring that reality behind "red water" and distant, low-quality CGI robs the movie of its tension. The idea of a protagonist trying to pull a friend to safety, only to realize the extent of the catastrophic injury, is exactly the kind of visceral horror seen in classics like Jaws or Anaconda. There at least could’ve been a great we’re gonna need a bigger boat scare moment that never happens in the film, and since the director in the included, making of feature mentions Jurassic Park as an inspiration, one can see that inspiration did not lead to effective execution of the premise.

Steven Spielberg channeled Jack Arnold’s underwater camera work from Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) to create that primal, unseen terror in Jaws. Stealing from the best is a time-honored tradition in filmmaking, but Hungry forgot to bring the actual tension that made Jaws and Jurassic Park work. Then there is the horror movie logic that feels predictable and while the characters are fleshed out just enough to be a little more than just types, they are not interesting enough to carry the film, especially with Costas Mandylor, whose filmography of more effective horror roles, makes him the only truly recognizable actor in the film, (at least at the time of my screening it), to feel like a wasted opportunity. Hungry plays it too safe, and as a result, the film will never be remembered as one of the great survival horror pictures of the early 21st-century in the way that the movies that the filmmaker was inspired by will always be remembered, and it will never be even be remembered as a guilty pleasure like the movie Anaconda, which knew from the beginning exactly what it was and executed its premise to absolute B movie perfection.

As far as the DVD is concerned, the picture quality is fine. Upscale to 4K it’s more than possibly clear to view and enjoy, but some of the reds bleed a bit, perhaps unintentionally in the opening credits while the English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack is serviceable, but will not hold up against anything like a true Dolby ATMOS Soundtrack would have. English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are provided as an option, and the making of feature runs for a bit over 18 minutes. The main menu features full motion video, but there are no subsequent menus beyond that. Hungry will be available on DVD on August 11, 2026 courtesy of Decal Partners / Aura Entertainment.
