(April 25, 2016) –Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrates the 30^th anniversary of the generation-defining fantasy: LABYRINTH, newly restored in 4K.Directed by renowned filmmaker Jim Henson, executive produced by George Lucas (Star Wars) and with a screenplay by Monty Python’s Terry Jones, LABYRINTH stars David Bowie (The Prestige) and Academy Award^® winner Jennifer Connelly (Best Supporting Actress, A Beautiful Mind, 2001) in the story of a girl (Connelly) who must save her little brother from the Goblin King (Bowie). 

 

As part of the anniversary celebration, the film will have a limited engagement theatrical run through Fathom Events and will be shown in select movie theaters in the United States on Sept. 11 & 14. Following the theatrical re-release, the beloved fantasy will come to Blu-ray^™ and next-generation 4K Ultra HD^™ Sept. 20, with the Blu-ray available within a gorgeous 24-page Digibook package that includes rare photos and a look behind the scenes. In addition, the film will be released in a Limited Edition Gift Set in unique “mirrorbox” packaging inspired by the film’s climactic and iconic final scene.  LABYRINTH is presented with an all-new 4K restoration and exclusive Dolby Atmos sound on both the Blu-ray and the 4K Ultra HD releases. The film was fully restored from the 35mm original camera negative, thereby utilizing in 4K the full resolution, detail and color depth inherent in the film.  4K Ultra HD brings the full power of this restoration into the home, featuring four times the resolution of high definition, high dynamic range (HDR)--which produces brilliant highlights, vibrant colors and greater contrast on compatible displays--and Dolby Atmos audio, remixed specifically for the home theater environment, delivering captivating sound that places and moves audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. The Blu-ray will also utilize this new restoration at HD resolution, and an all-new DVD will be available on this date as well.

 

The LABYRINTH 30^th ANNIVERSARY Blu-ray is loaded with all-new bonus content, which features Jennifer Connelly in one of her first on-camera interviews about the film since its release.  The new special features will take fans behind the scenes at the Center for Puppetry Arts—home to The Jim Henson Collection as well as puppets from the film—and include all-new discussions with the Henson family, and special reflections on working with David Bowie in his iconic role as the Goblin King. 

 

Synopsis:

A selfish 16-year old girl is given 13 hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King.

Synopsis:

RISEN is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer.  Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a powerful Roman military tribune, and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus (Cliff Curtis) in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.

Director Albert Lewin is often cited as one of the earliest intellectual directors in Hollywood, spending most of his young adulthood as an English academic. As one might expect, his films were often grossly misunderstood and underappreciated in their time.  Perhaps the best example of this is his 1946 drama The Private Affairs of Bel Ami, adapted from Guy de Maupassant’s novel and starring George Sanders and Angela Lansbury. It received near-unanimous negative reviews at its release, most notably from Bosley Crowther of the New York Times, but it is now widely praised by cinephiles. The film echoes many of the recurring themes in the director's work: artists at war with themselves, harmful obsessions, and a fusion of baroque and surreal styles. Lewin’s fascination with aesthetics famously manifests itself in The Private Affairs of Bel Amiwith a single Technicolor shot juxtaposed against the rest of the film’s black and white. The Technicolor shot in question is of Max Ernst’s grotesque and disturbing The Temptation of St. Anthony. To find this painting, producers held a contest called the Bel Ami International Art Competition in which 11 artists including Salvador Dalí, Leonara Carrington, Eugene Berman, and Dorothea Tanning participated. They each submitted their version of the often-painted story of St. Anthony, which itself reflects the film’s themes. A jury selected Max Ernst’s, and its presence in the film has gone down in film history as incredibly jarring and powerful.

Fans of the film French Postcards have long been waiting for a DVD or Blu-ray of the film that includes the theatrical version’s beloved soundtrack. In the ancient world of myths and monsters, Medusa, the earliest depiction of Gorgons in Greek art, is recognizable by her venomous snake hair. Gazers of her face would turn to stone. Now, the artists at ECC are rediscovering the history of Mythology, finding in it inspiration for the reimagining of these characters.  

From a fascination with the natural world, the intricacies of geometric design, heroic tales of gods and monsters, to a passion for the human form and the Classical Style, the Medusa bust is one of the most carefully and subtly conceived sculptures ECC has created to date. She is more than just a straightforward illusion of flesh and blood. She is also an essay in order and proportion, a meticulously composed scheme for how a mythological creature should be. Each venomous snake on her head has intelligence, and is individually looking for their prey.

This Medusa is the first female character designed and created by Steve Wang for ECC's Transformotion line, and is also the centerpiece of our new Elite Arts Collection.
