Disney’s Cinderella: Anniversary Edition: The Walt Disney Signature Collection: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Multi-Screen Edition Review

Disney’s Cinderella: Anniversary Edition: The Walt Disney Signature Collection: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Multi-Screen Edition is one of the most comprehensive home media releases I have seen. I was amazed by the amount of extra value material that was included on the Blu-ray Disc alone. Perhaps ninety nine percent of what is included within the Blu-ray Disc and frankly I am surprised at the amount Burns Vista Home Entertainment was able to pack onto one disc without sacrificing the picture and sound quality. Sure most of it appears to be ported over from previous editions, but short of releasing a 4K version, I would say that Disney’s Cinderella: Anniversary Edition: The Walt Disney Signature Collection: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Multi-Screen Edition is the definitive home media edition to own. 

Now I think most people are familiar with the premise of the film so I am not going to discuss that because in my opinion this is really the story of how Walt Disney brought Cinderella to the screen in a manner never before seen. So here the extra value features are more interesting to me than the film itself because everyone knows it is one of Disney’s many animated masterpieces and deservedly so. I just want to detail what you get with this set and hopefully those who were thinking of upgrading or have not yet purchased it will go out and buy it when it streets at retailers on and offline on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 courtesy of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. 

The film is presented on Blu-ray in the original (1.33:1) aspect ratio of it’s theatrical exhibition. This surprised me because Disney was a visionary and he shot TV shows in color before anyone owned a color TV set as one example so considering this is a film from around 1950, I expected it to be widescreen though Disney has the viewer covered in many ways. Absolutely a must viewing mode is the In Walt’s Words: The Envisioning of Cinderella mode because it uses the entire 16 By 9 real estate to present photographs, storyboards, concept art and more as one hears commentary recorded of Disney discussing the project with the team of animators who made it happen and much more. This version of the film is worth the price of buying this media release alone. There is also a viewing mode where the bars to the left and right of the feature have been filled in almost like ever changing curtain designs in a virtual movie theater experience. Finally there is the normal academy aperture presentation presented in 1080p full HD with accompanying English DTS-HD MA 7.1 Sound, a 2.0 and a 1.0 Soundtrack in English too, which hopefully should satisfy those who prefer to hear it in the original theatrical release and theatrical rerelease versions with the sound intact. French and Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks are included on both the Blu-ray Disc and DVD versions along with EnglIsh Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired and French and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded as options for both discs. The DVD features both an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack as well as an English Monaural Soundtrack.  The picture quality on the DVD looks a bit washed out when upscaled to Ultra High Definition. Both discs also feature animated motion scene main menus that are nearly identical. In addition to all of this, a limited time redeemable code for a Movies Anywhere Digital Copy is available on an insert within the Blue BD packaging. 

The extensive bonus features include an introduction (1:16) from the Disney Museum located at the Presidio in Northern California, a making of documentary (38:28), a look at the Cinderella that never was (12:34), The Magic of the Glass Slippers: A Cinderella Story, a black and white silent animated short Laugh-O-Gram (7:24), a behind-the-magic Disney Princess Fantasy Land Featurette (8:17), a profile on the art of Mary Blair (14:56), one of my favorite critics I watched growing up, Joel Siegel discussing the film (22:09), Storyboard-To-Film Comparisons (4:49), an alternate storyboarded opening sequence (1:13), a look at the actress who provided the archetype and voice for the fairy godmother (11:50), a reel of trailers from the various theatrical releases that can also be viewed as one reel (9:07), three radio spots (2:55), Ilene Stanley’s appearance on The Mickey Mouse Club (3:55), trivia (4:48), and trailers for Toy Story 4 (1:43) and a preview for the 4K Ultra HD release of The Little Mermaid.

For all of this and more, Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s Disney’s Cinderella: Anniversary Edition: The Walt Disney Signature Collection: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Multi-Screen Edition is a recommended home media release worth checking out.

Dumbo: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Code Multi-Screen Edition Review

Along with new Star Wars and Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and television shows, over this past decade Disney has revisited many of it’s animated and iconic classics and produced live action adaptations of many. Dumbo is among the more recent ones and it is directed by Tim Burton, who identified with the misfit or outsider theme that discovers a way to be more positively extraordinary than anyone could ever imagine. It is a theme Burton seems to know well when one looks at his filmography with an introspective eye and for those who don’t, think of Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer only instead of saving Christmas, Dumbo saves a family, which by extension includes the circus, which is in of itself an extended family. In both cases unscrupulous people are trying to breakup the family in both forms noted above as well as Dumbo’s being empowers the family to reunite Dumbo with his Mother and his extended jumbo elephant family too. 

The film eliminates the songs and talking animal characters while still acknowledging their memory in the form of visual nods and dialogue. The look of the character of 

Dumbo is slightly exaggerated toward Burton’s unique style of characters and the production design captures an at times almost water colored storybook quality that feels appropriate for the film. Several alumni from other Tim Burton pictures appear in the film, including Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton, and Eva Green. Colin Farrell and Alan Arkin also star in the movie.

The Blu-ray Disc features a beautiful and crystal clear 1920 by 1080p (1.85:1) widescreen full HD presentation, which looks even more gorgeous when upscaled to Ultra HD 2160p resolution. I detected that the aspect ratio on my TV appeared a bit different than (1.85:1) with slight black bars above and below the image, but I can’t determine what the aspect ratio was exactly nor can I compare it to another unconverted presentation because I only have one UHD TV to screen films on. There is also a movie-only DVD included, but compared to the UHD upscaled Blu-ray, the standard definition presentation looked washed out. I found the same to be true of the DVD presentation included within the new Blu-ray release of the animated Cinderella, but I will cover that release in a separate review.

An excellent English DTS-HD MA 7.1 Soundtrack mix is provided along with an English Descriptive Audio Track for the Hearing Impaired. The DVD differs only that it includes 5.1 Dolby Digital English Soundtrack instead of DTS-HD MA. Both presentations also include French and Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks along with English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded as options. An insert containing a limited time only redeemable code for a Movies Anywhere Digital Copy is also included within the blue BD case.

The main menu for both the Blu-ray and DVD presentations features motion images from the film and are easy to navigate. The cult-favorite animal rock-band from Hanna-Barbera’s 1968 The Banana Splits Adventure Hour variety program is back with a blood-spattered vengeance!  Warner Bros. Home Entertainment brings you The Banana Splits Movie, an original feature-length film on Digital on August 13, and on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on August 27, 2019.  The movie is priced to own at $19.99 SRP for Digital, $24.98 SRP for Blu-ray Combo Pack ($34.97 in Canada), $19.98 SRP for the DVD ($24.99 in Canada). 

 

The Banana Splits Movie will offer a new take on the classic characters. The film follows a boy named Harley and his family as they go to a taping of The Banana SplitsTV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley. But things take an unexpected turn — and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom and their new pals safely escape?

The Banana Splits Movie stars Dani Kind (Wyonna Earp) as Beth, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (The Kindness of Strangers) as Harley, Romeo Carere as Austin, Steve Lund (Street Legal, Schitt’s Creek) as Mitch, and Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries, A Series of Unfortunate Events, War for the Planet of the Apes) as Rebecca. The beloved Bingo, Fleegle, Snorky and Drooper are voiced by Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons, Woody Woodpecker, UniKitty!). The film is written by Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas (Raven’s Home, My Super Psycho Sweet 16) and directed by Danishka Esterhazy (Level 16) with music by Patrick Stumph (Fall Out Boy, Gnome Alone). The movie is produced by Blue Ribbon Content in association with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and SYFY. The Banana Splits Movie will make its broadcast debut on SYFY later this year.
