New Trailer for The Dog | True Story behind Dog Day Afternoon

Lover. Husband. Soldier.

Bank Robber.

The story behind the man that inspired Al Pacino's legendary role in
the Oscar®-Nominated Dog Day Afternoon.

On behalf of Drafthouse Films, we are excited to announce that Apple Trailers has premiered the NEW Trailer for THE DOG, In Theaters August 8th and On-Demand August 15th!

THE DOG - Trailer Debut

----------------------------
THE DOG - In Theaters August 8th and On Demand August 15th!
----------------------------
Directed By: Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren
----------------------------
Running Time: 100 Minutes
----------------------------
Synopsis:
An intimate portrait of the vivacious John Wojtowicz, the inspiration behind Al Pacino's character in Sidney Lumet's Oscar®-Nominated Dog Day Afternoon.

Coming of age in the 1960s, John Wojtowicz took pride in being a pervert. His libido was excessive even by the libertine standards of the era, with multiple wives and
lovers, both women and men.

In August, 1972, he attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover's sex reassignment surgery. The attempted heist resulted in a fourteen-hour hostage situation that was broadcast on TV. Three years later, Pacino portrayed his character instigating the unforgettable crime on the big screen. The award-winning film had a profound influence on Wojtowicz, and when he emerged from prison six years later, he became known as "The Dog."

Filmed over the course of a ten-year period by co-directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren, and interweaving extraordinary archival footage on the robbery, 70s era interviews and the early gay liberation movement in which "The Dog" played an active role, the documentary captures the many sides of John Wojtowicz's larger- than-life persona: he is by turns lover, husband, soldier, lover, activist, New Yorker, mama's boy and bank robber.

FANDOR | July Film Highlights

JULY 2014 HIGHLIGHTS

Featured Films

JULY 4 - FANDOR EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE

MY AMERICA (2014) dir. Hal Hartley "Who are you, America?" To mark its fiftieth anniversary, the prestigious New England theater Center Stage asked fifty celebrated writers to create monologues answering that question and then entrusted independent icon Hal Hartley to film the results. This feature version draws on twenty of those wildly disparate explorations. Their voices include a beauty pageant contestant who’ll never win a prize for brains; a U.S. soldier stationed in Afghanistan; a man talking about his crack-addicted sister, and another whose selling of "ten dollars of pot" led to a life in prison; a minister whose views on gays differ from his congregation; a crusty dowager worried about her coddled descendants; and a 1960s-bred free spirit still flying the freak flag decades later. There is room for an absurdist historical lesson as well as an entirely sung baseball anecdote. By turns angry, comic, political and poetical, MY AMERICA is a smorgasbord of distinctive character snapshots offering plenty of virtuoso acting and idiosyncratic style.

JULY 11 - FANDOR SVOD PREMIERE

STARLET (2014) dir. Sean Baker STARLET explores the unlikely friendship between twenty-one year old aspiring actress Jane (Dree Hemingway) and elderly widow Sadie (Besedka Johnson) after their worlds collide in California's San Fernando Valley.  Jane spends her time getting high with her dysfunctional roommates and taking care of her chihuahua Starlet while Sadie passes her days alone, tending to her garden.  After a confrontation at a yard sale, Jane finds something unexpected in a relic from Sadie's past. Her curiosity piqued, she tries to befriend the caustic older woman. Secrets emerge as their relationship grows, revealing that nothing is ever as it seems

JULY 15 - FANDOR SVOD EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE

A YOUNG COUPLE (2009) dir. Barry Jenkins John and Jenn are young, in love and living together. But this is no dreamy tale of magical romance from Medicine for Melancholy director Barry Jenkins, who trains his camera on his friends to learn what it actually takes to share a life. As he explores the shared space of their tiny San Francisco apartment and observes their rhythms, they answer his gentle questions with a fumbling authenticity that communicates volumes about commitment.

JULY 25 - FANDOR SVOD PREMIERE

BLACK SUN (2005) dir. Gary TarnAfter French artist Hugues de Montalembert was blinded by robbers who threw paint thinner in his face, he learned to take in the world with his other senses. He narrates his journey from darkness in this portrait by musician-turned-filmmaker Gary Tarn, who finds a cinematic equivalent to the sensations of light and color that de Montalembert "sees" behind his eyes. There's no room for self-pity in this unique tale of triumph over adversity.

JULY 9 - MY AMERICA SCREENING

At the IFC Centre, NY, with Hal Hartley & Ted Hope Q&AA beauty pageant contestant, a minister at odds with his congregation, a man in prison for selling drugs. These are a few of the twenty voices heard in cinema icon Hal Hartley’s feature, which draws on original monologues to the question “Who are you, America?”

JULY 16 - THE COLD LANDS SCREENING

At the Roxie, SF with Tom Gilroy Q&AMother dead and wary of the authorities, 11-year =-old Atticus flees deep into the forests, relying on whatever food and shelter he can find. He latches on to Carter, a pot smoking drifter, and as their interdependence grows, neither is sure they made the right decision.

JULY 18 - SPOTLIGHT ON SEXPLOITATION Fandor have selected a group of films that charts a (roughly) thirty year period where sex and nudity emerged from the underground, starting with nudist films and documentaries that covered "adult" topics under the auspices of being somewhat "educational." These frequently low-budget and boundary pushing films outgrew the grindhouses in the 60s with productions becoming increasingly artistic on an international level between the 70s and 80s.

MY AMERICA

A Hal Hartley Film

Releasing July 4th only on Fandor

Webpage & Trailer:

http://www.fandor.com/films/my_america

About MY AMERICA:
Originally commissioned by Centerstage (the State Theater of Maryland), MY AMERICA is comprised of twenty-one monologues written by some of the nation’s most exciting playwrights, (including Neil LaBute, Danny Hoch, Dan Dietz, Marcus Gardley) which form a sort of fractured portrait of the American collective psyche. Ranging from the sad to the hilarious, from the angry to the tentatively celebratory, many of the major and recurrent issues associated with our fraught but beloved union are reconsidered with elegance, wit, brutal honesty, and a little outright insanity.  The keenly observed and crafted monologues are performed by notable actors from Jefferson Mays to Kathleen Chalfant, as well as Hartley regular Thomas Jay Ryan.

Hartley is a prolific American filmmaker whose work has won numerous awards at Cannes and Sundance. His work includes such feature films as SIMPLE MEN starring Bill Sage and Robert John Burke, NO SUCH THING with Sarah Polley and Helen Mirren, and FAY GRIM with Parker Posey and Jeff Goldblum. Hartley’s works off-screen have included various acclaimed theater productions and MY AMERICA marks the first of Hartley’s films to capture stage-work on film.

The release of MY AMERICA on Fandor marks the eleventh collaboration between Hartley and Fandor’s CEO Ted Hope. Their first film together was THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH (1989), an unconventional love story about a teenager falling in love with a mechanic with a criminal past, which was Hartley’s first film. They have been frequent collaborators and colleagues since.

Director: Hal Hartley

Runtime: 78 Minutes

Distributor: Fandor

The two had a high-flying affair that spanned the globe and was enabled by the girl's fame-obsessed mother, Florence. It all came crashing to an end in October 1959, when events forced the relationship into the open, sparking an avalanche of publicity castigating Beverly and her mother - which only fed Florence's need to stay in the spotlight. Falling Skies Fourth Season Premiere Review

The fourth season of Falling Skies, which aired on Sunday, June 22, 2014 (ET/PT) following the the launch of the new TNT drama The Last Ship, feels like a bit of a cheat. Having had a won a victory against the Espheni  and even stood up against their alien allies, who wanted to relocate humanity to Brazil, where they said it was "Safe" is all but negated within minutes of the premiere. The Espheni now have improved their war machine and driven most of the alien Volm race off of Earth to protect their own people. Meanwhile the daughter of Tom and Ann, who is somehow a hybrid humanoid who looks like a younger version of the exiled Queen with the Dragons on Game of Thrones, but also feels like a ripoff of the Star Child from the original V miniseries and TV series from the 1980s, is the head of some cult and we learn that the Espheni are fighting a much larger galactic war against an opponent who may or may not be an even more malevolent force placing humanity at the crosshairs again.

It is my hope that like previous seasons of Falling Skies, this season will pick up and get better over the course of the series, but the show feels like it is being stretched beyond it's means and so it is my hope that whatever comes, TNT and the series producers consider ending the series satisfactorily by the end of the fifth season if the show is renewed. I would rather remember Falling Skies as one of the better sci-fi dramas of the new decade than watch it wither. Falling Skies season four airs on Sundays at 10pm (ET/PT) on TNT.

Falling Skies: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray Disc Set Review

The third season of the TNG original series Falling Skies was the best yet because it gave the viewer insight into the invaders they were fighting as well as intrigue from the new aliens who appear benevolent, but still encounter distrust from characters within the group. Noah Wyle is sharp as Tom, a freedom fighter, who was once a history teacher and finds himself as both a representative of the 2nd Mass and an elected political official in Charleston. The series costars Moon Bloodgood, and Will Patton. The season features recurring Guest Stars Robert Sean Leonard as a scientist with severe agoraphobia recruited to the cause and the one and only Doug Jones once again buried deep under makeup as the benevolent Volm alien representative nicknamed "Cochise."

Falling Skies is presented in a 1080p full HD (1.78:1) aspect ratio across two Blu-ray Discs with English DTS-HD lossless audio and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as Spanish, Portuguese, and Thai Language Subtitles. Several documentaries and multipart featurettes are included and the discs come housed in a Blue BD case within a glossy cardboard slip. A coupon for a limited time only free Ultraviolet HD Digital Copy is included as well.

It is important to have patience with Falling Skies as it tends to start slow, but then always develops rapidly to an action packed conclusion.

Falling Skies: The Complete Third Season is available now Blu-ray Disc at retailers on and offline courtesy of Warner Home Video. The fourth season is now airing on TNT with the premiere having aired on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 10pm (ET/PT).

ABOUT REINVENT HOLLYWOOD:

Main Page:  http://www.fandor.com/reinvent-hollywood

If you could redesign the film industry into the best possible system for the artists, the audience, and the business, what would it look like?

Ted Hope, CEO of Fandor, along with Reinventors, and a group of industry luminaries, will answer that very question in the six-part interactive web series “Reinvent Hollywood.”

With the advent of low-cost digital production and post-production technology, the tools to create and distribute both short and long-form filmed entertainment have never been more accessible, and yet the Hollywood power structure continues to rely on an antiquated methodology of finding and presenting this entertainment to the world.

But what does this mean for the status quo in the film industry? How can those interested parties, the artists and the audiences, work with the distributors and the rest of the existing power structure to affect these changes and create a bigger tent, helping the industry as a whole move forward? That’s what Reinvent Hollywood will answer.

“Art, regardless of the medium, has always been advanced by the audience, creators, and technology – far more than business or the market can,” said Hope. “Fandor’s mission is to help build the world’s film community through the advancement and preservation of film art and culture. When good movies go unseen, talented filmmakers cannot support themselves and our government is not defending Net Neutrality, it is time to demand change.”

Hope and a team of industry experts will discuss the state of the film industry throughout this six-part series streamed live onReinventors.net. A recording of each episode will be available the following day onFandor.com. Each 90-minute session is edited into a recap and a short trailer, and write-ups of what was accomplished will be available on the series’ landing page after each roundtable.

The series is divided into six episodes, with each part focused on a topic that addresses the larger issue at hand – the future of film. The topics for each of the six episodes are: The FormThe ArtistsThe AudienceThe BusinessThe Festivals, Schools, and Non-Profits, and The Rules of the Game.

Fandor and Reinventors are also asking you to do your part as the audience. For each episode, Hope will be joined not only by a team of experts in the field, but also by you, the general public. You can join the conversation for each episode via Google Hangout, along with Hope and his ever-growing list of industry experts as we all collectively move Hollywood forward. The episodes will also be available indefinitely online for those that miss it live.
