A look at Arrow Films, Waterworld: Limited Edition Blu-ray Disc

Waterworld was at the time of it’s theatrical release consider d to be one of the most expensive genre films ever produced and the press at the time had a lot to state about the film that depicted it in such a negative way that everyone was expecting a a terrible movie and when it was finally released, the same press begrudgingly had to acknowledge that the film was not so bad. In fact Waterworld was entertaining. The damage was done even though it did just make back over it’s budget, the expected box office was not achieved. Subsequently Waterworld would go on to become a popular cult film and while the film has not aged as well in terms of what was acceptable in the 1990s for a popcorn film has become a bit more campy by modern standards with some characters saying or doing things that just make no sense. Yet I admit that back in the 1990s, I liked Waterworld and I was impressed by how much of science fiction world was created and I liked Kevin Costner’s portrayal of the mutant mariner, the Mad Max inspired reluctant hero of the film and Dennis Hopper brought just enough scene chewing wherever he appeared that he was fun to “boo” so to speak internally, but still enjoy him.

This review is not a normal Blu-ray Disc Set review because I reviewed it from check discs, which I usually never do and only two of the three discs were received and despite questions I made about the film’s packaging and physical materials, what I ended up receiving was a reply that said “I only had two discs.” None of my other questions were answered and while for the record I was the one who made the request to review the film because I had a soft spot in my heart for it and so I willingly accepted the check discs, I will never again do that because for an independent reviewer who has been covering genre films for over twenty years, it is not worth the extra trouble.

So based on what I received, both the theatrical cut and the extended cut look great, but not fantastic. I asked if those copies were the last produced before Arrow went to press and again I received no answer. So I cannot say with any certainty if the picture is the same as the final product because it might look much better than what I reviewed. If Arrow should want me to update this review in the future by sending me actual final product, I will be happy to look it over, but since one of the versions remains unseen and I do not want to give an opinion one something that could actually not be an accurate judging, I am focusing on what is the reason why despite what I have noted above, I would still recommend Waterworld fans buy this limited edition set and that is because the extra value features are worth the purchase of the set alone.

Everything I ever wanted to know and all the rumors I ever wondered were true are addressed in the fantastic feature length documentary (1:42:32) that covers the film from it’s origins as a b-movie knock off to it’s epic scale that attracted Costner, the production and everything afterwards and since. The interview clips with the screenwriter, Director and Producer are informative and enlightening. Regardless of what you may think, it truly makes buying the set worth the price of admission. I loved it. Thank you Arrow films for shining an overdue light on the making of this legendary epic genre film.

This is supported by extensive preproduction art and production photo galleries, a terrific look at the evolution of post ecological disaster films with Film Critic Glenn Kenny (22:21). An archival production featurette (9:20, visual effects still galleries, and the teaser (2:00), trailer (2:15)and a reel of TV spots (9:00) wrap up this awesome package. English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo Sound as well as English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are encoded onto the two check discs I received while both versions, the American theatrical cut, extended TV cut with over forty minutes of additional footage and the sight unseen extended international “Ulysseses” cut.

Despite not being happy with the way the check Disc situation worked out, the extra value features found on the Blu-ray set are the reason why I am recommending Arrow Films’ Waterworld: Limited Edition Blu-ray Disc Set for fans of the film now that it is available at retailers on and offline.

"21 Years: Quentin Tarantino" -- Director Tara Wood Reclaims Rights to Authorized Docu from Weinstein Co.; Seeking New Distributor

Los Angeles, CA February 14, 2019—Director Tara Wood has successfully reclaimed the rights to the authorized Quentin Tarantino documentary feature, “21 Years: Quentin Tarantino”. The film, a celebration of Tarantino’s works-to-date, looks at the passion behind the worldwide box office dominator. The lightening rod that is Tarantino’s career illuminates the discussion of changes in the industry.

In 2017, Wood, co-director of 2014’s acclaimed “21 Years: Richard Linklater”, asked The Weinstein Co. to release the documentary following the onslaught of sexual harassment allegations against company founder Harvey Weinstein. “TWC should respectfully release us from our deal,” Wood said in a statement at the time, “To allow the project to be handled with the care and consideration it, Mr. Tarantino, and all the participants deserve.” The company refused, and Wood embarked on a prolonged legal battle.

Now, Wood is proud to announce that the film has returned to the creative team at Wood Entertainment, and is ready to find the right home for distribution.

“We are thrilled, and eager to conduct our final interviews and complete the documentary, free from Harvey Weinstein and his complicit cohorts” said Wood last week. “We look forward to finding a new distribution partner, timed with the July 2019 release of Quentin’s next film, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.”

Quentin Tarantino’s career is unmatched in its wellspring of talent and the diversity of subjects in his eight films to date. In the trendsetting RESERVOIR DOGS and the ground-breaking PULP FICTION, Tarantino revolutionized the status quo. He reworked genre and celebrated badass women in films like JACKIE BROWN, KILL BILL and the gasoline-charged DEATH PROOF. He took on issues of race in America in DJANGO UNCHAINED and boldly rewrote history in INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, leaving us snowbound in the ultimate “who done it” murder mystery, THE HATEFUL 8. His films reap as much controversy as they do accolades. The documentary coincides with the end of an era – the collaboration of Tarantino with the now disgraced Harvey Weinstein.

Longtime staple Tarantino collaborators speak to the essence of his passion and the success of his career: Michael Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jamie Foxx, Eli Roth, Zoë Bell, Robert Forster, Diane Kruger, Kurt Russell, Louis Black, Richard Gladstein, Scott Speigel, and Stacey Sher.

Wood concluded, “This project has always been in honor of Mr. Tarantino's career, and as a woman, creator and protector of that vision, I am grateful to have it back in caring, respectful hands.”

Overlord 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Set Review

I think Overlord was originally going to be the fourth Cloverfield anthology movie, but after the straight to Netflix film was released, they removed any references to Cloverfield, which is a good thing because this movie did not need it.

Basically Overlord is sort of like From Dusk Till Dawn in that film the first half is a crime thriller and the second half was a vampire schlock flick. Only here Overlord never goes over the top and plays it straight throughout.

The effects are top of the line as the first half is a WW2 D-Day invasion film in that paratroopers land in France with a mission to take out a German radio tower in a church so the allies can land on the beach with air support.

After about 45 minutes to an hour it turns into a horror film where the Nazis had found a mysterious substance deep beneath the church and have been using it to create super soldiers that don't die easily and can reanimate. The film has a definitive ending that explains why this story is not in the history books and that is that. Overlord is a solid flick worth seeing.

This combination 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc + Blu-ray Disc + Digital Copy Set features virtually more language options for both the 4K BD and the BD versions than I can list because some are listed in the language they are spoken in and I simply cannot tell what they are so if I left out some options, I am sorry. Both versions feature English Dolby ATMOS Soundtracks as well as an English DSV Track for the visually impaired. I believe a German Dolby ATMOS Soundtrack as well as Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks. English Subtitles and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are also encoded onto both discs along with Malaysian, Cantonese, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Suomi Language Subtitles are encoded as options.

The 4K widescreen has an impressive color palette with deep blacks and lush greens despite the at times monochromatic nature of the film given the setting and so forth. When bursts of red occur whether it is blood, gun fire, flames and military machines blowing up they take up an even more impressive look that just pops on screen. Unconverted the 1080p edition might have certain viewers preferring it over the 4K HDR version if only for what it lacks in deep color saturation it make up for in brightness that for some might be preferential over the more shadow evocative 4K Disc presentation.

Within the black 4K Ultra HD single size Two Disc BD Case is an insert with a limited time only numeric code allowing for the redemption of a digital copy of the film for iTunes or select other providers. The Blu-ray Disc also features a series of featurettes that can be viewed individually or as one reel (51:28) and covers in impressive detail the development of the story, the visual effects, which were mostly practical and casting as well as the experience the actors had working with each other. While Mr. Abrams says the casting choices were not for historical accuracy so much as to find the best person for the part, which I find to be admirable, Wyatt Russell, who looks and sounds so much like his father it is uncanny, stated the film takes place in an alternate universe, which made me wonder again about whether or not this was going to be a part of the Cloverfield Anthology of films even though I have read that when J.J. Abrams was asked at SDCC 2018 regarding the connection, he said it was not. Personally I do not think it matters because the film stands well by itself and yet I hope they never try and make a sequel because having watched this film three times now, I have noticed so much subtle touches and clues that create a sense of wonder in that as I have stated, less is more, I don’t want to see someone take this up in twenty or more or less years and make an unnecessary sequel. Overlord is a gem. Please enjoy it, but leave it alone.  I love the soundtrack by Jed Kurzel. It sounds like what I imagine Goblin and Carmine Coppola working together might sound like if they had ever collaborated.

While both films are very, very different in their approach and style, I want to mention Richard Raaphorst’s Frankenstein’s Army as a film that might make for a good splatter filled double feature in part because I think Frankenstein’s Army deserves to be viewed beyond the cult audience it has attracted as an independently produced WW2 period horror film, but the films share similar themes as well as I like seeing a film that tells a story of Soviet soldiers entering Germany toward the end of the Second World War because there are not a lot of English language films that cover this and they were allies instrumental in the defeat of the NAZIs in WW2 so they deserve their due just as the American and British Soldiers do because it could not have been down without any of them and make no mistake, the AXIS powers were in my opinion some of the most vile and malevolent threats to humanity the world has ever faced.

Anyway, Frankenstein’s Army is available on Blu-ray and streaming and has been for five years now, but the Overlord: 4K + Blu-ray + Digital will debut along with a Blu-ray and DVD edition sold separately and on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at retailers on and offline courtesy of Paramount Home Media Distribution.
